Would the Audigy 2 NX or the Audigy 2 ZS Notebook be of any benefit for someone with no surround sound speakers, just your basic stereo speakers and headphones?

Thinking about buying a external soundcard for the laptop and maybe use it back in forth with my desktop computer.
 
I have a Toshiba Tecra S1 and yes, it is better quality than the onboard sound. I don't regret buying it.
 
Do you use it with speakers or headphones and what brand/type do you use? I don't have the best speakers or headphones.
 
Well to be honest I have mine plugged into my 80s model Realistic STA-450 stereo receiver which is plugged into my Quest bookshelf speakers (they are actually quite tall and deep, about the same height and depth as my 21" monitor). Also I listen with my Senheiser HD570 headphones with it as well. I have to admit I prefer the sound I get through the headphone output on my stereo receiver however but even when plugged directly into the Audigy 2 NX I find the sound quality far superior to what I was getting from the laptop's output.

If you are using cheap speakers it's a hard call. You may or may not notice the difference. You will most likely notice a different with the headphones however unless they are $3 headphones.
 
I used the NX as a replacement for the sound in my Tecra S1 aswell, along with a 5.1 setup. Sounds great....still does now that I use it for my desktop, I hardlly use the remote, but I suppose it nice to have.
 
I will agree with you on that. They didn't really implement that remote as well as they could have. It only works their software and controls the volume.

I mostly use it to control the volume when i'm away from my computer but it's a cool feature.

I have seen some sites on the net that offer ways to use the remote to opperate other software such as windows media player but I havn't been able to get any of these solutions to work on mine.

My only complaint aboutr the Audigy 2 NX would ahve to be the quality of the Microphone input. I don't know if it's just mine or not but iit has quite a bit of background hiss and overall my internal sound seems to have better recording quality which I have to admit is quite odd. I even tried recording something with the highest quality settings but the hiss is still there. Everyting else seems to work very well and i've ben happy with it.
