Laptop battery question

If the unit powers up just fine plugged into the ac adapter and the battery doesn't charge at all .. does that automatically mean that the battery is dead?

this is an HP DV73000 series (AMD x2 Turion w/ AMD graphics)

the guy that had it really messed up the AC adapter plug in and the DC jack on the laptop .. I replaced the ac adapter and then took out the needle that he had shoved into the DC jack .. I plan on replacing the DC jack (bought one online and took unit apart to replace but found out that not all DV7 series are the same .. lesson learned with replacing laptop parts in the future)

.. put the unit back together so I wouldn't have worry about losing any pieces/parts .. and decided to try plugging in the new AC adapter to the marred up DC jack .. it plugged in all the way, and the unit powers up and runs just fine .. but the battery doesn't charge at all .. the owner said that the battery was charging fine whenever he could get the old fubar'd AC adapter to make contact ..

when I powered up, the unit immediately wanted to do a checkdisk on the hard drive .. which tells me that the laptop had lost power abruptly a few times prior to me getting a hold of it ..

My bottom line question then I guess is .. will replacing his DC jack do anything for his battery even though its running fine right now (minus the battery charging that is)..
 
How old is the laptop? There's the possibility that the battery may no longer be able to handle a full charge.
 
a couple/three years or so .. came with Vista and a blu-ray player .. and HDMI output .. I have a DV9 series (AMD x2 Turion w/Nvidia graphics) that runs a couple hours off of the battery ..it's about the same age ..doesn't have all the fancy media extras like this DV7 series does .. both have the big wide screen displays.

I have some way older laptops that still turn on for a few seconds at least and then shut off because the battery is shot .. but this one doesn't even flicker on when run straight off the battery
 
Due to my general lack of experience, I can't tell you whether or not replacing the DC jack will impact battery performance or lifespan.
