Hey, my step-sister is going off to college soon and she is looking into laptops. She isn't doing any [H]ardcore gaming or anything but when I visit her I'd like to be able to play a few 3D intensive games. I was wondering if you can buy laptop "barebones" kits and throw in a CPU, RAM, and hard drive, I thought I had heard something similar to this before, and I'm starting to remember seeing something on NewEgg similar to this. Also, can you buy "mobile" graphics cards, or whatever you might call them?

the graphics card are built onto the mobo when you buy the barebones kit, so make sure you buy a good one from teh start. heres a barebones kit i highly recommend and am looking into for myself: http://www.rjtech.com/r259ia3.htm

it even includes a radeon 9700 256MB  :D

just slap in a 1.6 or 1.7 P-M, a 40 GB 5400 RPM HDD, and 512MB-768MB of RAM, and youre good to go.

P-M 1.6GHz
P-M 1.7GHz
Kingmax 512MB PC2100 when it comes back in stock
Corsair XMS 512MB PC3200 when it comes back into stock
Seagate 40GB 5400RPM 8MB Cache 5 year warrently... very convenient.

that should be about it for that notebook. i recommend gettin a DVD burner in the barebones kit too.

DVD burner isn't really going to be useful, only when I'm there lol which won't be often.
just saying.... its a good investment for the future....

I recommend also checking out the Compal CL56 on rjtech.com as well. Barebones on that start at $889 last I checked. It has 128mb MR9700 instead of the 256mb version but the money saved might be worth it if your sister or you is not a hardcore gamer that needs to max out all graphics option.

The compal and the uniwill mentioned above are definately my 2 recommendations

Ok, here is what I'm pretty much going to finalize. I think I'm going to go with the Uniwill R259IA3 because it's only $100-ish more, the wide screen and how thin it looks. The 256MB 9700 also made me choose it over the Compal.

- Uniwill R259IA3 barebones $1049
- Intel Mobile Pentium M 745 1.8 GHz (Dothan) $299
- Patriot Signature 200-Pin 512MB DDR SODIMM PC-2700 $76
- WD Scorpio 2.5" 60GB 5400RPM HDD (I'm fond of WD so I'm firm on this.) $102

Total - $1526

If I forgot anything please tell me.

P.S. - I'm guessing rjtech.com has a good reputation? Also, does the Uniwill kit come with a CD drive?

the Uniwill includes a DVD Drive/CD Burner I believe. You can customize the notebook at R&J Tech. Yes, from what i hear, R&J has a good reputation.

I'd recommend the Seagate just because of the warrenty. Seagate is a reputable company with good products. I'm a WD man myself, but when in comes to teh HDD, esp nowadays, I'd go w/ teh HDD w/ the better warrenty. But if you want teh WD, go ahead and get it.

otherwise, the lappy looks good and is ready for purchasing.

is all you like to do is run around showing ppl wat lappy you bought?!?! good lord, mate. this is like the freakin third time youve posted this stuff in less than 15 mins.

i suggest going for a 7200, ur sister will appreciate the additional money spent on the faster drive. i upgraded my 5400 to 7200 and i easily noticed difference in loading times and even improved my fps by a few in a few games
