Who uses their notebook computers as there desktop. With an external display, Mouse and keyboard? I was thinking of setting mine up as my desktop sometime when I have the money for a good size monitor.

I have started using my new thinkpad T61 as my primary computer. It works pretty well, it is easily powerful enough for most tasks (except gaming). I use it with a dell 2702 WFP which works great. A big drawback is that you don't really have the storage capacity of a desktop. Something that would fix that well would be a barebones comp set up as a NAS or just a ready made NAS box. You could easily hide that away someplace in a closet or something. That is on the to do list for me.

I would only set mine up temporarily until my current desktop rig is upgraded or replaced with a really good desktop.

back in college i had my 12" averatec hooked upt o a mouse and keyboard and 17inch moniter

it was okay for most things i had to do, but once i came back home to my original main rig, the difference was very very noticable.

IMO laptops are good for basic stuff and portability, but it can never replace a good desktop for me

I have a 14.1" Thinkpad R61... I occasionally do this although I will be doing it full time after Christmas. It won't replace my big rig but it will replace my low power desktop.

This really depends on what you want to do with it.
For normal tasks there isn't much difference because of dual core laptops and high amounts of ram/disk space that are now available. If you are wanting to game then it's another story unless you fork out the money for a gaming laptop.
I had a sager gaming laptop as my main for 2 years nearly because I was traveling abroad. I must say I missed the desktop, especially the ability to upgrade easily, cheaply and usually get a nice gain from it.

yeah most laptops are atleast a year or more behind in gaming it's just not the same to game on a notebook compared to a desktop

I've got an HP (compaq) nc4000 I use as a desktop. Came with a little docking station everything plugs into to make it just like a desktop. Only drawback is it gets hot and can't be upgraded. Granted I'm about to replace it anyways.

I used my HP zx5000 as my main pc for about 6 months back in the day. The only peripheral I used was an external mouse, because the touchpad on that thing sucked.

I tried this route myself but as a pc gamer the realization that the notebook simply cant be as easily upgraded nor as cheaply as a desktop forced me to give it up. I switched to a SFF set up as my mobile gaming rig and main rig. Not as easily as portable as a notebook obviously but still very portable and can be easily upgraded at a cheaper price and also be used as a main desktop work horse. SFF units, like desktops, are much more easily repairable than notebooks. I build and repair my own now though.

To be fair to notebooks they have gotten cheaper and more upgradeable than past years but still not at a price point or at a ease I find satisfactory.

I did it for 2 years. It's...not my favorite. However, if you're not the most demanding about your games and it seems to make the most sense to you, then go for it. It's not so bad if you have an external monitor for home use. And, if/when you're ready to get a desktop, it'll be notably cheaper once you already have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.

While I was in university I used an Asus W5Fm notebook as my only computer (was expensive so it was really my only toy) had gma 950 grpahics so i couldn't play games, which kept me on the ball for studying. I ran it with a 22" lcd along with a KB+mouse and Z5500 speakers, served me well while going through school. I've had many notebooks over the years and have at one time or another had one as a main rig hooked up to an lcd and kb=mouse, as a matter of fact i'm using my MSI wind right now on a 24" lcd:D
