Has anyone lapped the stock hs that comes with the opty 165? Im going to but wondered if you got a great deal difference on heat disapation. When I took off the thermal pad, not a big fan of thermal pads, I noticed alot of scratches. So I thought I would lap the hs and see what kinda gain I get out of it. Ive heard nothing but good things about this hs, so hopefully ill be able to post some good results when done.

If there are big scratches in the bottom of your HSF, You're going to need ALOT of lapping before you get those out :). Nonetheless, smaller scratches do hinder performance, and, well, I'm sure it'll help 1-2c if done correctly.

Bought me 4c, imagine when thermal paste settles down might get 5c lol. Dont know if it was worth the 2 hours of work.

2 hours isn't so bad. I spent about that on my SI-120 and opty IHS for about the same gain. I think it was worth it.

Once, I spent 8 hours on a crappy Tt orb. That experience turned me off of Tt forever. Yes, I know I could have saved time by buying a lower grit # than 400, but I was already started at that point.

why don't you lap the top of your ihs too :). If your lapping helped your temps, you might be able to OC a bit further too. Try it :)

Hint for lapping the IHS: I've read that you are supposed to hold the chip by the sides so you don't hurt the pins. This method sucks because it is difficult to apply even pressure. I placed the foam anti-static pad that came with the proc over the pins, and pushed down with my palm on that.

I lapped the IHS on this Celeron because it's coming off and going on a Dothan that will be seeing desktop service (the chip to the right). I guess it's not bad for my first time lapping an IHS.

The Celeron will also be used to flash the bios on the P4P800-VM in order to support the Dothan. At least I won't be wasting a Pentium...

I would oc a little more, but seeing as how i have a a8r-mvp board it doesnt let you get to high on volts. I'll volt mod the board, just havent gotten around to it. Id like to retain the warranty of the cpu, so I left the ihs alone.

Pushing down with force causes the lapping to be dubious. You let the weight of the part being lapped provide the downward force. All you have to do is provide the side to side force. :)

Thats what I did, did it in one direction, after sliding it down 10 times rotated 90degrees and did it again. Did it 10 times per grit.
