I just received a SwiftTech MCW6002 for my first water cooled PC and I was surprised to find that the bottom surface of the block was not at all shiny. Would lapping the block help with reducing temps, or would I be wasting my time?

It's not supposed to be shiny, but should have a matte finish, dull but flat and smooth to the touch.

Do not lapp the block.....

Yes, you are right. The block does have a matte finish, and is dull and smooth. However, many other blocks are shiny. I am assuming that is because the manufacture wants to produce as smooth a surface as possible in hopes that this will improve heat transfer to the block. Why is SwiftTech being different?

Which is better from these two?

....and from another angle

Shiny=pwned

On a more serious note: Where do you guys get your 2000 grit sandpaper? I've been looking around for a while and haven't been able to find any.

I have seen it at Wal-Mart. It is cheap.

Thanks people. I've been to Lowes and Walmart and only found 1200 grit. I'll keep looking. :D

Car supply shops.

2000-grit, and even finer, is used in the painting and restoration of car finishes. If there's any place that will carry 2000-grit, it will be any decent car parts supply shop.

Seconded. It was the only place besides car shops (who charge an arm and a leg!) that I could get it. The variety pack of 3M imperial was what I got. Great stuff

Another alternative is industry paint supply stores - as in the sorts of shops that trade painters go to. I tend to find that these are cheaper than most anywhere, but are less common than Walmarts and/or Car Supply Shops.
