i was wondering first of all what lapping was? and how do i do it? all i know is that whenever i see people that lapped their heatsinks or waterblocks, it turns super shiny..

any advice?
 
Read this, or google "heatsink lapping". That article shows you everything you need to know, not that there's much to know anyway.

Instead of doing a circular motion, your going to want to do one direction for about 18-20 laps, then do the other direction for about 18-20 laps.

Start with the heatsink like | then after 18-20 laps, move it to _ that direction. Also, when doing a wet sanding, add a lubricant of some sort, I think Cathar said a dot of dish soap and some water.

Thats the best advice I can give. A lapping job isn't really for getting a shiney waterblock, but more for acheiving a flat waterblock, in the flattening processor however, the shineyness will happen. Which in return, means nice physical contact with the CPU core.

If you really want to get picky, you could also lap the heatspreader on your CPU, that would be for the ultimate in contact.
