has anyone lapped the amd64, similar to the old celeron slugs?

You lose megahertz for every flake of CPU dust that is lapped off. :D

Yes it can be done and yes it does help. (although I haven't seen it done on an AMD64) IMO, it's not worth the risk. You would only get 1*or 2* C better and as mentioned before, it is really easy to damage a CPU. The trick to doing it properly at least with the AthlonXP CPU's is to just take the raised lettering/numbering off the surface.

have any of you guys read the first post? He's not asking about AMD AXPs, he's asking about A64s, which have a heat spreader much like the P4s do. I haven't seen an A64 first hand, but i wouldn't hesitate to lap it if it were uneven/concave. I've lapped a P4 or... 5 in my time, i dont know if the AMD is as concave as the P4s notoriously are... But if it floats your boat, why the hell not? Just uh... dont lap too far ;D

on an a64, its pretty safe. They have a metal heatspreader, exactly as the p4 does protecting the core. Use high grit sandpaper and you will be absolutley fine. good luck!
