Lapped my quad last night. Man this is one of the worst chips ive seen.

Looks beautiful. Do you have any before and after temp numbers to see what you gained?
 
When lapping, did you rub the CPU over the sand paper, or the other way round? I'm trying to work out the best way to do it when the time comes.
 
I use a plate of glass then paper on it (this ensures flatness). Dont use any other surface
 
How much further can you OC now that your temps have surely come down. :)

I was nervous and antsy before lapping my 300 dollar CPU... I dont think I could consciously lap a Kentsfield.... thats just insane.

here is a pic from my e6600 lapping. I enjoyed 5 degrees load temp drop. :)

I went lap crazy. I lapped my monitor. I heard it gave you better resolution. Now I can't even see how low my temperatures are!
 
after lapping do you still use AS or whatever grease you might prefer, or do you go greaseless?
 
i use AS ceramique. Im in the works of building a new phase system. So ym current one is gonna go up for sale

You will never get two surfaces to the point where some thermal material isn't required. You just need less and get a better overall mating of the two surfaces.
 
I lapped few CPU's and really doesn't do all that much. If your ever going to resell the CPU it's just not good to lap it.

Good work! Yeah, that is a nasty looking IHS, seems the thing would completely lift the HS off the die center looking at those edges. I got 10C lower on Orthos after doing mine.

I've been researching more and more about comps recently and I have been spending a lot of time on this site. I've never heard this term before, but that's because I had a Dell, but now am researching a ton and working on completely swapping out all my Dell parts into a custom-made PC. Could someone please post on how EXACTLY you "lap" and what EXACTLY are the benefits, just so I have a clear understanding? What are the tricks of the trade?
 
I dont know the exact method but I wouldn't recomend it for putting it in a dell, because lapping is done to have better cpu temperatures allowing further overclocking, which is impossible in a dell, lapping evens out the surface of the processor to have better contact with the heatsink.;)

Look at my comp specs, I said I was swapping out my Dell parts, which as of now are only the Video Card (not really a Dell), CPU (not really a Dell) and an Audigy 2 (not really a Dell) :)

I'm looking to get a E6300 or a E6400 in the near future and this thread got me curious about "lapping". I appreciate the "better contact" comment, it helps me understand!!

Btw, wouldn't just having natural thermal paste on the CPU/heatsink even any uneven surfaces?

I'm not afraid to do anything. LOL It's waste of time and energy to get your CPU 2C lower. Your CPU isn't going to clock any higher because you lapped it. Maybe 10mhz. Why not take out the heat spreader? Make direct contact with Heatsink and core? People just don't like lapped CPU's if you ever do resell it because of warranty void and you would be selling at a loss usually.
 
The IHS is soldered on and with quads like this the heatsink can sit wrong and cause two cores to skyrocket in temps. like ive said 8c was my least temp difference. Time and energy?? Took 10min of my time including setup and cleanup
 
nice. from the looks of it, it probably benefited from it. I sure got a temp drop when I lapped my last e6400. Luckily my ES e6400's ihs is damned near perfect. The edges are slightly tapered, but :). would be hardpressed to get rid of INTEL CONFIDENTIAL

What IHS is soldered on? Ive never seen a soldered IHS on a modern retail proc. If people want to take sandpaper to their $1000 CPUs, more power to them. I personally wouldnt do it and am skeptical about the real value, but thats a different discussion. Technically, it does make sense that it would possibly yield some benefit. Id need to physically be there with you before, during and after to believe 8C as a MINIMUM gain just from sanding a CPU and HS though, sorry.
