Hi... i was wondering if anyone knows whether i could fit a 60 to 80mm fan convertor in the additional 60mm fan space above the vid card?

the 60mm ceramica fan i have is the only thing making my system a bit noisy... and i cant adjust the speed without getting a device to control it...

so i figured i could maybe get a 80mm convertor and then just get an 80mm fan... a lot more options with 80mm as well!

Does your 60mm fan have a molex or 3pin mobo connector on the end? If it's a molex, you can always just do the 7v mod, change the fan red wire to the yellow on the power supply molex connector, and the fan black wire to the power supply red wire.

has 3-pin but came with a molex adaptor...i had considered doing this... but the problem is that with this damn small case! i have a modular PSU to conserve room and i have 1 molex x 3 cableconnected which is used by all the stock fans... if i wanted to add this additional fan via molex then i would need to add another cable (molex x 3) for the sake of 1 fan... and i dont even like to imagine the thought of trying to fit that in!!

so i am sort of stuck using the 3-pin to the mb.

i have a p5k-vm and it wont allow you to adjust the speed of the chassis case fan!!!

The case isn't tall enough to fit an 80mm in that space. Although I find the 60mm moves almost no air in the first place. I think you're better off just removing it.

Is your 3.5" bay being used already? You can get a fan controller which would make things a little easier overall. I have Vantec Nexus fan controller and it works great. My system isn't quite silent, but it's pretty quiet...hopefully I'll get to quiet whenever I move everything over to my SG-01 (got it at Fry's for $40:D:D:D)

as far as the 60mm moving air - its shooting air pretty hard out the back! how much of a diff thats making inside the case i dont know? but i would have thought that by sticking your hand over the back of the case where that fan is would be a good indication of how much air its moving...? a lot more air moving then from the 2 stock ones behind the CPU...

might try removing it and then monitor any change in temp... only thing is then i guess i would need to add an app to monitor the temp of my vid card??? i put that fan in to try and pull air across the passive cooling on the vid card...

thought about the fan controller but my other 3 case fans are all molex... and i thought you need 3-pin for the controller...

hmmm....

Comes with 2 molex to 3 pin converters...if you could get a third one, you'd be able to control all your fans. Personally, I would try and replace all 3 fans with 3 pin connector fans just for the sake of having less wires in my case. And I also have a Vantec 60mm fan and it moves way more air than the stock fans do. Also makes a little more noise, but it's not terribly noisy.

Well, I have my 60mm as intake. Brings airflow to the hard drive, and moves in the same direction as my X1950 Pro. (A rear-side fan single slot cooler.)

unless the stock fans are not keeping the system cool enough then i wouldnt really bother changing them simply because i dont really see much diff in space between a molex or 3pin connector... if i could remove the molex modular cable from my PSU then that would be great!!! but my SATA cable doesnt have a molex on it :(

i dont do any real overclocking and i mainly use my system for graphics so would you say the stock ones would be fine? should i just remove the 4th fan (60mm) or do you think it is serving a purpose for my vid card?

i like the fan controller but it just seems like another thing i need to try and squeeze in there!

sometimes i wake up in a cold sweat and the last thing i can remember is having to open up my Lanbox case! LOL!

I had incense lit on the far left side of my desk and the smoke made a bee line for the vent on the left side of my LanboxLite (which sits at the far right side of my desk). I would say the 3x 60mm fans in the back move plenty of air.

with a passive cooling vid card (8600GT) could i afford to remove the additional 60mm fan?

it comes with 2x 60MM fans located below the PSU. The third fan above the video cards is not included, so its your call whether or not to mount one. That being said, I don t know how hot 8600s run but you would probably be ok without a dedicated case fan pointed at it. The 3rd fan exhausts hot air out of that top corner, a more effective set up would be something with a side mounted fan throwing air directly at your passive 8600 heat sink.

Dremeled out a 80mm mount on the PSU plate to avoid using a 60mm for gfx exhaust. The 8000GT was heating up the case faster than it could get rid of it.

i8088, what fan controller is that you have on your Lanbox? I'm moving to an SG-01E soon and am looking for a decent 5.25" fan controller.

Also, as an alternative to this mod, one could try the Antec Spotcool. I have one in my other SG-01 build, but I'm not sure how well it would fit in a Lanbox, and I guess you'd still have to make a hole in the PSU plate for the air to get through.

ok... nice work with the mod :)

well i dont really wan to take things apart at this stage and add the extra fan on the PSU bracket.

2 questions:

1 - is having the 60mm fan there better then nothing? or should i just remove it?

2 - as far as the vid card goes can i simply monitor this by the case temp reading from the MB temp in the BIOS? or do i really need to install an app to read the vid card temp?

Yes, having the fan is better than nothing. I'd go ahead and put it in. Make sure you have a good fan. The stock thermaltake fans barely move any air compared to my Vantec fan.

No, you need a separate program. Use Nvidia monitor or ATI tool to monitor your temps.

Its a Scythe Kama meter. It was the closest match for my lanbox lite, not to mention the screen can change several colors and the price was pretty cheap. There are mentions everywhere in owner reviews these units can blow their transistors with anything more than .5 to .7 watts per channel, so no 120mm or combining several fans. Mine has been running fine for over a year now with 4 fans. Has 4 temp sensors / 4 rpm sensors + bogus audio volume.

Heres a review of it ..

just installed rivatuner...

i have had my pc running for like 5 hours today... just using photoshop... the core temp was 66-67C.

does that sound okay?

ps. all i did was install and then go straight to hardware monitor... so can i just uninstall now and it wont have tweeked anything?

For a passive card in an SFF case, that sounds about right. That's about the temps I used to get on my passively cooled 7600GS. Really, you'd be better off with a card that has a fan, but that's easier said than done.

yep it is :)

but is that temp higher then what would be ideal? based on that temp do i need to start modding the case to get more air on the vid heatsink?

ps. the cord from the 60mm fan is lying across the top of the vid card heatsink... does that matter... its not gonna melt through the insulation is it?

My X1900GT with the single stock fan idles in the mid 50's and loads in the low 70's in my Lanbox. Your card will probably get in the 80's under load, but it should be fine as long as you don't see artifacts or anything. However, it is better to have lower temps if possible. I wouldn't mod my case. I'd rather get a better cooling solution for my video card instead, because modding the case isn't going to decrease temps as much as getting a fan will.

I don't think the cord is going to melt, it'd have to get really really hot to melt it.

I beg to differ... Having a better cooling solution on the graphics card might cool the card, but it will be exhausting directly into the case. If anything case temp will be higher. With the stock 60mm fans, the area behind the CPU near the chipset would get to 45C air temp. It now has dropped 10C, and the graphics card goes no higher than 75C-80 top under any condition.

Then again it all depends on what your system is composed of. Stock components might be fine but OC a quad with 4 sticks of tracer 8500s with CRYSIS running and your lanbox could accept some kebab skewers.

slayer, you can actually put a slot fan right next to your video card if you're worried about cooling. I have 2 lanboxes and I remove the hard drive bracket in front of the case which is blocking the intake fan on the front of the case. Then mount the hard drive either in the side bracket or in the 5.25" bay.

The Tt fans hardly move enough air but you can however mod it with a 60mm to 92mm fan adapter protruding out the rear of the case. This way you can have a 92mm fan sucking air out the rear and have better airflow. Here's a link to the adapter: http://www.svc.com/fa6092-uvblu.html

on another note, TWO515TY: how well does the Zalman cnps7700cu fit on the Asus P5E-VM HDMI I was going to move my asus board into one of my lanboxes and I wonder If i'll have any space problems. Does the 7700cu hang off the side of the mobo? or will it fit just right?

It does hang off the side a little, but I had no problems getting it to fit inside my Lanbox or my SG-01. With the Lanbox, it may brush the fins a little when sliding the motherboard tray in, but apart from that, it fits just fine.
