LAN Voice Chat

Run a mumble server on a spare box maybe? Or a quad core being used, as I highly doubt it would impact performance significantly.

Make sure all the devices are on the same subnet. With a dumb switch, they should all have 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.254 with a mask of 255.255.0.0. Some devices may still be using the IP/subnet when the DHCP server on the router was available (usually 192.168.x.x with a mask of 255.255.255.0).
 
Ventrilo is very lite and will run on pretty much any PC even if it's being used for gaming. I had a public vent server running for me and friends off my home PC for a long time, had no performance issues.
 
I personally enjoy TS3, although I am not sure if it has the option to be free.

Ventrilo is pretty nice too.

Why does everyone hate Skype so much? It uses up a bit more power from your PC but it worked fine for me when I used it. :confused:

That's pretty much the max. The upper-bound for the bandwidth requirement is 133kbps (including overhead) and from the Mumble wiki:
SThe default is 72000, which is 72Kbps. Setting this over about 130000 doesn't really do anything.

My host decided 10000000 was a good number for that.

Basically you can set it to something stupid if you feel so inclined, doesn't matter. The client caps out around the 130kbps range with overhead.
 
My friends and I won't use anything other than Skype. The voice quality rocks and you don't have to worry about running a server. Not to mention PTT sucks...

I love hearing other people having phone conversations when they don't have PTT setup.
 
LOL @ you guys^

We don't have a problem... We'll just mute ourselves if we need to do something else. SO much less of a hassle that the craptastic Vent software.

Yup, I almost never trigger voice by accident, I just have a mute hotkey so if I need to move around or get up or talk or something nobody hears it. It's fine 99% of the time.
