LAN using crossover and still use my router?

I recently upgraded one system at home and now have the following setup:

Cable modem to 4 port 10/100 switching router, then out to 2 systems. One system has a 10/100 NIC, the new one has 2x 10/100/1000 ports.

I would like to keep them both through the router for the internet connection as it has a firewall in it. I also want to utilize the gigabit connection for the LAN side. Basically buy a 10/100/1000 NIC for the second system and get or make a cat6 crossover cable to connect the 2 systems. This would leave 2 NICS in each of the systems.

Why, money. The router is perfectly fine and spending $100 for a new one vs $25 for a NIC and some cable to get a gigabit lan seems wasteful.

Can I make this work? Some setting to allow external traffic over the 10/100 and local traffic only over the 10/100/1000? The router has DHCP so I can set a different NAT address for each card.

Thoughts comments questions concerns???

Thanks
Timmy

Yes, you can. I don't know if windows will automatically use the faster link, but you can force it by (I assume you're using windows file sharing) only allowing the file sharing on the faster port.

Its kinda like how I have my server set up. Port 1 us heavily blocked with firewall and is set as DMZ host, so I can access it from the outside. Port 2 is effectively internal (to the same router as port 1) as it isn't DMZ, so it can't be seen from outside, and has very little securty. Whenever my computer connects to the server for an internal (ex: windows file sharing) function, then it uses port 2.

yes.

Set up one link to be automagic DHCP.
Set up the gigabit link to be point to point by assigning a static IP off a different subnet and DO NOT put a gateway address on that config. Yes it works fine. I do the same thing.
