LAN over coaxle experiences

As long as the wiring in your house is of decent quality (hopefully RG-6), MoCA works reasonably well.
 
i have never heard of running ethernet over coax. but i have heard about lan over powerline. not to thread jack or anything, but can you still watch tv from the receiving coax connector if you put a splitter in? because this is a pretty good way send wired internet around :)

edit: i just realized that this is exactly what a modem does.... face palm

No it's not. Well, not really. MOCA adapters convert coax to ethernet, whereas modems convert coax to ethernet, but they also convert the RF signal to a digital signal.

Yeah...I did thousands of those back in the day. With good old Intel Pro 10 ISA network cards, all those T-bars and term caps...ugh...hated troubleshooting those. Novell 'n Artisoft LANTastic networks.

To the OP's question...regarding MOCA bridges..they work quite well, I've done a number of them..Netgear has a decent little kit that includes a pair to start with.

Yes you can.....there are still some legacy networks in place running on that old crap and we've had to get parts for them. There are still warehouses out there in retail channels with stocks of old 3COM and Intel EtherPro NICs with BNC/AUI ports on 'em.

Obviously somewhere in the world is going to be a warehouse full of old computer shit that never got sold. Can you get thinnet gear? Yes. Can you buy it new from a B/M store or from somewhere like Newegg? No. I don't even know wtf you are trying to argue here.
 
I used to run some 200mbps MoCA adapters. Actual transfer speeds are around 70mbps which is adequate for streaming. IMO it's not worth it as a matched pair of wireless n routers in bridge mode costs less, performs the same or better (unless you're streaming from the basement to the top floor or something), and is much more versatile. I ended up running CAT6 through the walls.
 
MOCA adapters are a good option, as are Powerline Adapters. I have ran both, it all depends on the condition of the wiring and how much noise exists.
 
When my "whole home" IP-based PVR was originally setup, the boxes were set up connected by coax (Motorola VIP 12xx) using "HomePNA". And it worked like crap.

Haven't tried MoCA though. Just be aware that there are different specs on this stuff - not all Coax to Ethernet is MoCA.
 
The fastest realistic Coaxial ethernet standard is 10base2. Too slow for shit. Just run some ethernet cables or go wireless N. Simple and works. Nuff said.

I have ATT Uverse and they ran Coax through my house to connect all the room boxes to the main box in the liv rm. Well now that was horrible. I switched them all out the 5e cables and bam not a damn problem. I put them on a cheap 100baseTX swtich problems solved. Full digital signal between the base box and all the guest boxes. Dont go with Coaxial or powerline networking. Powerline networking is horribly inconsistent right now. I had some netgear 85mbps boxes and they sucked so bad I took them to the woods and shot them with my .308.

On June 15, 2010 MoCA 2.0 was ratified. MoCA 2.0 offers two performance modes, Basic and Enhanced, with 400 Mbit/s and 800 Mbit/s net throughputs (MAC), using 700 Mbit/s and 1.4 Gbit/s PHY rates, respectively

400 and 800Mbit/s is "too slow for shit" huh?

"Digital to Analog"? Ummmm...not even close. It's just modulating an Ethernet signal over Coax line - it's full digital and up to 800mbit - well over 802.11n and as-close-as-doesn't-matter-to-most-people to 1 GbE.

As in my post above, their boxes use HomePNA - an entirely different technology from MoCA.

As far as shooting technology that fails to impress you - you're super cool awesome :rolleyes:
 
I've seen moca 2.0 chips showcased at ces but anyone knows if there are any devices that you can actually buy already?
