Hey guys odd request here but I've just spend half hour on skype with a friend trying to setup file sharing between Windows 7 and XP. I know it's not that complicated but honestly sometimes for no obvious reason things just don't work. You need to add "Everyone" give them full control, remove passwords, enable windows discovery, it's just a bunch of bull**** that I have to go through every single time and all of this to get 500mb across.
So here my question. Is there something out there that I can simply install on both machines and start transferring files over with minimum hassle. I'm thinking something as awesome as say "TeamViewers" which enables me to remotely connect to a PC and view whats going on. I spend some time on google searching for things but all the suggestion bring setting up FTP servers and more linux based information.
I really do hope there is a simple LAN file sharing program I can just install and uninstall when I'm done for the sake of moving a few files once a month.
 
Why are you so against setting up a simple FTP server? From the other end you would be able to browse it just like a shared network folder and it's really pretty simple to setup.
 
Google "lan file sharing software" and there's quite a few results. I'd list them here but can't endorse any of them.

Without software for your two computers and unless you enable simple file sharing with no security which isn't encouraged, you need to have the same username and passwords setup on both computers. Basically when one computer connects to the other it gets asked for credentials, and if the asking computer doesn't have a username and password in it's list of users it doesn't have anything to verify against.
 
I don't mind the FTP server it's just hard to explain to other people over the phone. I'm not saying Windows file sharing is complicated but meeh. I wish there was some preconfigured program out there that you just install on both machines and job done. Kinda the same simplicity as using a flash drive over to next pc.
I've googled and I did see some results but most of them seem to be for back when Windows 98 was around. If nothing like that is available no biggie, I'm just testing the water.
 
yeeees!!! It's awesome and it's 2 clicks to start sharing. Thanks Fattypants this is exactly what I was after. What's even better is you don't need client, you just connect to the web server through your browser.
