Laminated CPU?!?!?!

I bought a 2600+ Barton from newegg and i got it hoping to have some OC'ing fun and when i looked at it, the whole CPU is LAMINATED OVER. Effectively demolishing my OC'ing fun. Is there a way to get passed this? What is AMD thinking????

is this your first chip? Do you know what it's supposed to look like? It looks normal to me
 
Yeah i don't see the problem either. Maybe your thinking back in the day when you could connect traces with a pencil?

forgive me for being an intel nutjob but... you can't do that anymore?
 
no no no, ive overclocked quite a few chips using the conductive grease method on the L5 bridge. But this chip is COMPLETELY COVERED IN A HARD PLASTIC LAMINATE. I know some other people in here have to have the same thing i do.
 
hmmmmmmm... did you know that all pcb's have a coating of some sort on them? it's actually a handy way of telling if there's been major major damage-- if the board looks sort of discolored in splotches then it's ready for the dumpster.

got a slot a/socket 370 mobo like that once (won't say from who) and hoped to be able to track the prob down.

then i found out that mobo was only worth like $40 and it really wasn't worth the time, energy, or even the effort of getting the multimeter out of the cabinet.
 
I prolly don't know what I'm talking about, but from the string of numbers and letters in the first line on the bottom, it looks as though you got a 2400+ processor?
 
Yeah, we know what to do: overclock the hell out of it!

So what precisely is it that you want to do that you can't?

the pic i sent was actually the one from this site. There is kind of an article on the new packaging. Read it. It does say something on unlocking it...but it talks mostly of using the method for dual processing. Has anyone tried this method? It sounds pretty risky...
 
if it's the super locked kind you'll have to connect some bridges. If not an NF2 board sould unlock it auotmatically. or you could overclock via fsb.
 
i tried to OC via fsb and it blows. I want to unlock the true potential of it...maybe ill just purposely burn up the processor and then send it back for a new one. And hopefully the new one will not be laminated(?)

The green one IS the newer chip. The old (pre-locked ones) used to be tanish/pink in color. They stopped selling those earlier this year IIRC.
