Hi all,

I’ve got a question for all lanbox/lanbox lite owners.

Like most of us who overclock in these sff systems the overriding concern has been heat. At the moment I’m running a low vid g0 q6600 (1.15/1.12 load @ 3.015ghz) on a DFI Lanparty JR p45 in a lanbox lite. Have been very happy with everything so far, the overlock’s been rock solid (440fsb, ram on a 333/800 divider (I think, writing this at work) running at about 1050ish).

Only mods I’ve made thus far have been replacing the dinky Thermaltake 60mm fans at the back with two higher flowing units (23ish cf/m). At the moment system idles around 45-50c and prime95 loads at 69-73. Not dangerously hot but still warmer than I’d like. I know that with aftermarket cooling I should be able to push this chip to 3.4ish, hopefully even 3.6 given it’s proven stable on such low voltages.

HSF options are, of course, limited by a) motherboard to psu height, which is about 110m and b) motherboard heatpipes and northbridge cooler.

At the moment the best options for my combination seem to be either the Zalman cnps8700, thermaltake blue orb II or Gemini IIS. Other options such as the Scythe Shuriken, NT-06e etc are certainly compatible but I don’t think they’ll deliver adequate cooling performance. Does anyone else have this specific combination and a better recommendation for what hsf to use?

Finally, I’ve seen a couple of sugo sg01 mods where the psu has been modded to be placed over the pci slots area rather than the cpu area. I’ve been looking at the lanbox and don’t see a reason why a similar mod could not be performed on it. With a bit of creative (and probably maligned) metalwork, could have the psu sitting over the GPU area exhausting out of the case, leaving plenty of room about the cpu for a TRUE or similar.

Thoughts?
 
Some people here have actually cut a hole in the inner frame above where the PCI slots are to add an 80mm fan for more exhaust.

I've thought about doing what people do to the sg01, but every time I goto look at the case there is something that tells me I can't do it, but I don't remember what that thing was.
 
i am currently building a lanbox lite system...I am going with Asus P5E-VM HDMI mobo..I have done lots of measuring inside the box...If you were getting creative, a swiftech 220 or similar 2x 120 radiator could be fitted to the video card side of the case....you could remove the clear side and insert some gamers mesh and attach the radiator to the gamers mesh (thick mesh, not thin) and then you could route the tubing to cool the cpu, n.bridge and vga...
You can also move the 2x HD cage that is in the front bottom. Unscrew the screw from floor, and slide the cage to the next 2x rails and drill an new screw hole. Then you have it sitting near the psu side window and you have a large area to fit the pump...or a pump and a Swiftech 120 radiator or similar right in front of the blue led inlet fan...you could then use that to cool just the cpu..as i don't think that radiator could cool too many things.
I am really trying to fig out the best way to cool it and be quite, and still be small...I am currently leaning towards cooling the CPU with an axp-140...it seems like the perfect cooler for this case.
Also, have you added a fan up top above the graphics card? You can mount it at a 45 in to point down at the card, or flat for exhaust...
You can also route your PSU to never deal with the interior of the case. Draw air in from the top and out the back and then you don't have the base of the PSU fighting the cpu heatsink for air..I think this is how i am going to do my PSU...in the top and out the back...

I have searched the forums for pics of mods of Lanbox Lites, but all i can find is the copper case mod/paintings...I don't think people do a good job of labeling their mod pics

I've toyed with the idea of watercooling. If I were to go down that route it would probably be with something prebuilt, along the lines of swiftech compact with the 1x120. I say this because I'm doubtful if a 2x120 would fit with mycurrent configuration (I have removed the HD cage at the bottom to increase airflow, using the external 3.5" bay instead).

I think the rad would definitely have to be on the vid card side of the place, for one thing the front intake is only a 92mm and beyond that its flow is severely restricted by grills/mesh etc.

AXP certainly looks sweet, provided it has enough clearance on my board. If you do that you definitely have to invert the PSU so the two fans aren't fighting for air.

I'm very keen to try placing the PSU over the PCI slots still, though I'm armed only with a dremel and a lack of common sense. Being able to pop a TRUE or similar in their would certainly help with the cooling/overclocking situation!

Influencing this as well is the fact that finding the AXP140 here in Australia has proven difficult thus far
 
^^ I am looking at the pic and was wondering if its do-able putting the PSU on tom of the PCIs.. Thing is the PSU support is riveted to the case..

The PSU is held in a bracket which has the mounts for the psu and also a piece of metal stretching across the top to touch the opposite side of the case. Relocating the PSU would involve hacksawing through the vent on top of the PCI cards area (where I currently have a 3rd 60mm fan residing). I'm currently unsure as to how I would then mount the PSU. I'm thinking I would retain most of the original bracket then just figure out a way to attach it to the case.

Won't be able to do it tonight but will take some pics when I get home next. I'm just surprised noone has done this yet since there are no huge obstacles to it and the improvement in cooling performance would be most notable
 
I have looked at mine...your problem is going to be the securing screws for the PCI cards..

you can see right here that the horizontal bar above the 2x60mm fans represents the base of the psu. The securing screws go about 6mm above that...So you would have to recess the psu somewhat or bend the cards..But aside form that doesn't it just look like you could flip the psu no prob...It would also eliminate some of the probs people were having with long DVD/CD drives interfering with the cables coming out of non-modular psu's
 
Remember most cards are also higher than the attaching bracket. Also putting the PSU above them will rule out water cooling/3rd party graphics coolers.
 
Ater looking things over...It seems that...shockingly..the PSU in the best spot they could put it...It's just the perils of uATX
 
Looks like you're right, my 4850 extends a good 1-2cm above the pci slot bracket, meaning that placing the PSU there would be very, very difficult.

Looks like CPU cooling will have to go one of two ways now.

Airwise it's down to the new (and pricey) AXP-140 or the scythe ninja mini. I know the ninja mini is 'officially' too tall for the lanbox (I think it's 115mm while there's only 110mm of clearance. However I think that through some mild modding of either the PSU underside (simply removing the fan grill on the PSU should do it) or shortening the end (decorative) caps on the ninja it should be able to fit it. The only thing I'm unsure about is the orientation on the lanparty jr p45, as it has tall heatsinks. I'm inclined to take this path over the AXP-140 since I don't think a blow-down heatsink like the AXP will be particularly efficient in a lanbox. Having a ninja-style setup with the air coming in the front of the case, through the heatsink then out the rear 60mm seems a much better idea. Any thoughts on compatibiliy?

The other option is one of the Swiftech compact kits. I know I'd get better results building my own wc loop but the swiftech kits are relatively well priced here and they actually seem to perform pretty well, considering it will be cpu-only. If I went the 120x1 option I think I could simply mount it on the left-hand side window without fuss. If going the 120x2 I think a new side window could be designed and it mounted on there.

I've seen a handful of watercooled lanboxes/sff in general, but does anyone have any thoughts on a setup along these lines?
 
I wonder if you could fit a 120 radiator behind the front plate, sort if in the same spot as the 92mm fan that comes with the system...or you could use it horizontally in an unused 5.25" bay...something like that. There is a lot of 'free' room in the front end of the case if you get creative/own a dremmel
