I get small jolts in gameplay. Only a bit in Counter-strike but alot more in games like Farcry and Painkiller. I beleive that it's the pagefile being written that gives me the hits. Another 512mb ram should cure this or is there some technical hints or tricks I can do to get around it? Thanks.

well, how much RAM do you have right now? If you are running on 512 now, then you shouldnt have a problem.

One thing you can do is try reducing the size of your pagefile to something really small. Then play the game normally and see if you get the same slowdown. If you run out of RAM it will be fairly obvious.

If you do run out of RAM, well then, I would suggest that you need more RAM. However, even if you are getting some hiccups, it shouldnt be continuous. If it is writing to the pagefile, it shouldnt be having to do it over an dover and over.

How much RAM do you use without playing a game? Is your taskbar loaded? do you have a shitload of spyware or anything?

DETAILS MAN, DETAILS!:)

I don't have my taskbar loaded out and right this second with explorer and aim on I have 223mb avilable physical memory and I am using a pagefile of 193mb. It is continous. I don't have spyware either.

Well then you got a problem man.

I will tell you this. If you are runnign XP, you MUST.....MUST MUST..get more RAM. That is so very low for today's standards, especially when you are trying to play games like Far Cry and stuff.

If you are getting a continuous write, then you are going WAY over your physical RAM.

my win2k with zone alarm, object dock, avg av. takes about 105megs at startup.

win2k with only zone alarm at startup and sp4 takes 80 megs

win2k with only sp4 takes about 66 megs with a desktop on 10x7.

ps: i pay alot of attention to what starts up with my pc, and i was curious so i catalogued how much ram everything takes up during a fresh install.

run spybot search and destroy, and startup cop. consider getting maxmem from analogx.com and run it before you play a game. clean out you icon tray processes you dont need.

get another 512 and disable the page file... thats what i did. then again, i think my raptor could handle a page file, if i needed one that is..
