I've been using a Lacie 5Big Office for like 3-4 years now and in the last 6 months I've lost 2 drives. this prompted me to build a NAS which I'm in the process of doing but does anyone know how i can repurpose this box? it deposit have VGA out so i don't know how to make it boot from USB which would make a decent Unraid box. and the headless installs are just a pain.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

TIA!

Throw it away. Throw it away as quick as you can as Lacie is garbage and any of the hardware is trash. Don't waste your time trying to repurpose it, give it away.

Unfortunately, I must concur. LaCie is the Sharper Image of storage, making generally nice looking and horribly performing equipment.

so no one has repurposed it into an unpaid or freeness box, you're suggesting I take this $1000 box and simply discard it?

it's still performing quite well and has done so over the years but the issue with these boxes is that the OS sits in a partition in one of the drives that might soon fail. i had an HP EX495 before it and thats what happened to it.

anyhow thanks of the feedback!

Perhaps i should consider getting whatever $$ i can for it and putting towards the new one I'm building.

BY THE WAY does anyone know where i might find the Lian-Li PC Q26B here in the US?

I would sell it and build your own with the $$$. It is possible that you could shoehorn another OS onto it, but I am unaware of anyone successfully doing it. You can learn some more at the lacie nas FAQ and forums here.

Sell the monster and use your cash to buy a better server. Are you looking for a system with lots of 3.5 or 5.25 bays? There are other models out there on newegg which give you tons of drive bays.
