Got my new LaCie 321 monitor today [http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10503]
And I must say, this is the most impressive LCD I've ever seen. Mine has one dead pixel, but it is only noticeable on a white backround (it's stuck on red) but otherwise it's perfect. The most even backlighting I've ever seen. They also weren't kidding about the crt-grade color gamut... this thing rivals my old trinitron flat tube crt! Granted it'll cost you a pretty penny, but if image editing/creation is your thing, this is defiantley the way to go.

ANyone interested in pics?

Yes please? It looks the same as NEC 2180UX - same specs also. Is it made in Japan?

Haven’t seen on in person but I have heard really good things. Nice purchase man.

Enjoy

please post pics :) if youve seen the 213t, how well does it compare to the lacie in terms of iq?

Here are some pics (I'm not a great photographer :-\ ... err I mean, my camera sux0rs!)

they're on tripod so I dunno if they''ll be accessible...

Also notice the crappy sceptre LCD I have as a secondary monitor... I wish that thing would just die so 'd have an excuse to buy a better one!

the black level is really amazing on this thing...

And yes, it is virtually identical to the new NEC (they use the same lcd), lacie's is rated at 20ms though (not that that really tells us anything)

I can't wait till white LED backlights though... 105% NTSC baby!

Congrats on your new monitor!!!
I am interested in the NEC model(same thing as yours I guess).
I have a few questions if you don't mind.

1. Could you check which country is it made in?
2. Do you notice any ghosting or blur during fast gaming or movie playing?
3. If possible, could you make some brief comparison to Samsung 213T as someone asked before?
4. How is everything so far? Overall performance I guess.
5.Where did you order yours from?

I'll get back to you about the country... I believe it was taiwan though (I'll check when I get home) [EDIT - Sorry, the monitor says it was made in China, not Taiwan :) ]

While playing through half life 2 at 1600x1200, I noticed zero ghosting/streaking. Remember that this type of panel's response time is for every transition, therefore it is probably better than these so-called 12 and 8ms panels (this panels rated PR is 20ms)

I've never seen the samsung in action, but I assume they are comparable (I've read that the samsung is basically a proprietary verison of this type of panel.. I'm not sure if the color fidelity is equal though)

So far the monitor is amazing... I do have one dead and one stuck pixel, but 2 out of ~2 million is ok by me. I honestly think it looks better than my flat CRT trinitron I had (it's like a CRT only with perfect geometry and no flickering).

I ordered (or rather pre-ordered) mine from a place called integrated CADD systems, inc... ended up being $100 below msrp after shipping.

I was considering the 23" sony, but am extremely glad I went with the lacie instead!

Thanks, isamudaison.

Your reply was really helpful. I think Samsung's panel is called PVA which is their own version of MVA developed by Fujitsu. They say Samsung developed their own version to avoid paying royaltys to Fujiutsu. Who knows?

I really envy your Lacie. I have been searching this forum day and night for some info on a few LCD monitors. I am currently eyeballing the NEC's LCD2180UX. What is the difference between Lacie's and NEC's. Someone mentioned Lacie put in different LUT(don't know what it is). Does this give yours better response time or color quality or what else?

Also, could you post some other screenshots of FPS games and movie playing? That would be wonderful

I think your pannel is a winner unless the Samsung 243T widescreen cuts their price significantly.

Thanks.

LUT = Look Up Table... this may require a bit fo explaining..
The problem with most LCDs is that the signal they get through DVI-D is 24 bit, that is, 8 bits per channel. Additionally, the gamma signal is only 8 bits wide. This means you only have 256 levels of grayscale (yikes!). Adding a look up table will help to interpolate the 8bit gamma signal coming into the monitor into say a 10, 12 or even 14 (in the new Eizo ColorEdge series) bit values, in other words a LUT will cheat a 24bit signal into looking like a 32 or higher bit signal (damn you DVI 2.0, when will you arrive!). LUTs vary from manufactureer to manufacturer and the quality of the algorithm differs (I've heard that Eizo hand-tunes the LUT for EACH monitor as it comes off the line!!). Will you notice it when you're playing half life 2? Maybe. You MAY notice less banding. But then again, you may not. Will you notice it when you are color-correcting a graphic that's going into print? most definately. I don't know first hand the differences between the LUT algorithms between the manufacturers, but if I had to gues,s i'd say the heirarchy would go like this (best to less best): Eizo -> Lacie -> Sharp -> Nec/Mistu
Again, this is just a guess, and all I can be sure of is Eizo's placement in that list.

I'm not sure how helpful a pic of the monitor in action would be, but I'll try tomorrow after I get home from work.

I know how you feel though, I went in blind on this purchase becuase there was almost ZERO information on these new panels! I certainly got lucky though! Another good thing about lacie is that they use very high end backlighting, flawlessly covering the entire screen (i.e. no leakage on the sides, etc.), something I wouldn't be too sure about in the sammys.

Thank you much for the info. That explains a lot.

I really wonder how the NEC model would compare with Lacie's. I have a feeling that I probably won't get any answer in this forum though. The price difference is almost $400 so I may have to opt for the NEC. For Lacie's price($1700), I could go with Samsung 234T with just $100 more. Or even Eizo.
God... your comment on Lacie may have better LUT is putting me in a torcher chamber. I know it's just your speculation and I know it won't probably matter to what I really would do with my monitor but still.... My greed is stronger than my rationale as usual. :D

Also, it is on backorder according to the Lacie web-site. Must gained much popularity in professional graphics market only after about 1 month after they're released.

lol! You're just like me! The only reason I got the monitor is because I like to doodle around in photoshop, I'm professional by no means! I guess I've just been obsessed with monitors for the longest time!

The 321 HAS been in very high demand, when i emailed ICSS about my monitor they said that the pre-order list was very large but that my order was early in the queue so I guess I got lucky!

If I were you, I would probably just go for the NEC, but order it from a place tha has a 30 day no questions asked return policy. Even though some of the specs are different form the Lacie, I would guess that the differences would be hard to spot unless you had them side by side. As for the differences in the LUT, you could always email NEC and Lacie, I don't think it'd be too hard to get some techincal info about them to compare.

I'll try to get pics of the monitor in action in 3 or 4 hours.

So, any news on the Nec 2180 side???

I'm really much looking forward this monitor, since I've been just refunded for my second bad Hp 2335 which has the same pink/yellow problem of Apple ones.

The 321T in on backorder until January, but the Nec seems the same monitor (even the same enclosure!)

News ?

No news I guess.

I am just waiting for no reason. I wish the Lacie is a little cheaper. It cost almost as much as Samsung 243T.
I am also considering to get a notebook instead. In any case, what I want is always out of my budget. Beats my desire senseless.

Ok , finally I went for the Lacie... I have had a great deal here in Italy thanks to my uncle :)

It should bee under my Christmas Tree :))))

It looks a hell of alot like my 213T Congrrates dude............Thats alot of realestate

PS: whats with the geometry or is it the cameral lens giving it that look

Oops.. I guess I lied when I said I woudl post pics of it in action :) "Slipped my mind"
Yes, the geometry is due to the lens (it was up close)

RE: The NEC panels, I heard that early '05 they will release their 21" with White LED backlighting which they claim will have the widest color gamut of any display in history (I've seen early reports of white LED panels running at 105% NTSC... the most I've seen is a Mitsu CRT that costs $5k and has 98% ntsc :) ) I would have waited for led backlit panels to show up, but I have a feeling the early ones will be quite expensive and the total number of hours till half brightness will be rather low :(
