I keep seeing Ads for led back lit monitors.
Whats the deal with those babies? I am thinking about getting one just out of curiosity.
Does anyone have one of these and is willing to let us know what the deal is.

Just brighter more consistent back-lighting. My Acer Aspire One netbook has one, its pretty nice. Noticeably brighter when put next to a non-LED back-lite netbook.

Go to an Apple store and play with the 24" Cinema Display. One of the best looking LED displays out there and they are on display for you to look at if you want some hands one.

I disagree LED does not necessarily improve back-lighting uniformity due to individual LED variation.

The main advantages of LED are
1) Lower power consumption
2) Larger Color Gamut: For the better (Photoshop) or the worst (everything else?!)
3) Thinner
4) Local Dimming: The technique produces improved contrast, stronger blacks and whites and a greater range of graduation between them.

Advantages #1 & 3 explain why LED is more common in laptops.

Most LED monitors don't have local dimming. I can't think of a computer monitor that does and only a couple of TVs do. Samsung has big new line of LED TVs, but they are all edge lit and don't do local dimming.

Full R+G+B LED backlight (not just white) can change the colour gamut of the monitor as in HP LP2480zx, which is a professional H-IPS monitor.
From my point of view this is the most important benefit of LED nowadays, because the promises of lower costs were not confirmed. Of course there is lower consumption and most likely an ability to achieve lower brightness.

#1 = True
#2 = True
#3 = True
#4 = True, but only on certain HDTV models not LCD monitors. HDTV models with LED backlight and localized dimming are: 1) LG LH90 series, 2) Samsung A950 series, 3) Sony XBR 8 series.

Samsung's newer LED LCD HDTVs UNxxB6xxxx, UNxxB7xxxx and UNB8xxxx do not have localized dimming.

How much would #4 cost to bring to market on say 24" lcd panels?
