Full Circle:
This was the first morning in about 2 years that I have awoken to find an NVIDIA based video card in my own system. But I must admit that the BFGTech 6800 Ultra OC has been a screamer in DOOM 3 as most of you already know as well as many other titles. I am glad to see competition in the 3D video card market for a change, as it has certainly been a while since we have seen such closely comparable products from ATI and NVIDIA.
While NVIDIA is pulling ahead in many of the DOOM 3 benchmarks you will be seeing, I want to take a moment and echo something that John Carmack said a couple weeks ago. Don't live and die by the benchmarks as they don't tell the whole story, and I think many of you could make a decision that could possibly not be totally right for you and your gaming habits by basing your buying decision on a narrow set of benchmarks. We have been striving to bring our readers more real-world gameplay evaluations in our content and we truly believe it is the way to go when forming an opinion.
That said, The Official DOOM 3 Hardware Guide does a solid job of outlining DOOM 3 performance in a real-world scenario and does not pigeon hole your gaming experience to a timed demo run that does not tell you about exactly what is important, and that is your experience when playing games.
Congratulations to ATI for igniting an industry for the last two years and making NVIDIA strive to do better. It is hard to think of world without a video card better than a GeForceFX 5800. ATI has a tremendously solid line of cards now and so does NVIDIA. When you look at the overall gaming experience both are bringing big guns to the table that will keep the hardcore gamers out there very happy. Just dont let someone tell you what to buy because one had a bit better average framerate than the other. There is so much more to the picture now days as the 3dfx mentality of speed being king will likely do you more harm than good.
Man, it's refreshing to see someone down the middle instead of all of the bashing that is going on in here, both products are great, you can't go wrong with either. Kudos to Kyle for a nice little write up!
