Koolance - Bay, Pump, Res Combo

repost and too expensive for what is essentially a 75$ pump and an at most 25$ resevoir encased in aluminum with a 15$ temperature probe.
 
not trying to defend Koolance here or anything, but you are forgetting the fairly advanced control circuitry involved with their control boards. This thing does have automatic shut-off, automatic and/or manual control of 4 fans, 3 temperature probes which are digitally displayed on the front panel, and the best chromed brass compression fittings you can get. its not an AC controller or anything but its damn close, and flows alot better. Considering it is a straight drop in with no modification required i think the price is about right. Youve got to hold one in your hand before you really get a feel for the build quality(which is outstanding).
 
Well I have been a koolace nut from the beginning. I have an exos2 and an exos AL and several water blocks. I really like the compression fittings and the no-brainer approach to setup with their products. With that said, the one thing that was lacking to me was the flow rate. I felt like their blocks could really shine with higer flow rates, especially when cooling a cpu, 2 gpus and other stuff in the same loop. I will have to check this one out for my 06 build which will likely be in late summer.
 
well my temps are in my sig and i have been using that pump for about a year now. I would say that pretty much confirms what Mysogonist just said.
 
I have to agree with Ctrl_Alt_Delete, however I"m getting the Exos-2 Koolance Unit.
 
I have only owned one of their blocks and I was not impressed. It did work, but the overall quality was suspect.

I do like the looks of their control equipment. However, I am still suspect of the quality. That is just my take.

If you you look at the back panel you will find that it has two outputs for fans and three for temp sensors. The other problem I see is that the Res fill port is located in a position that would be very difficult to fill, unless you add extra tubing in order to pull it to refill the res.

Koolance makes some very "cool" looking gear, but they never quite build it for a DIY H20 cooler. It is a great idea-Bay-Pump-Res all in one, unfortunately is was not designed by a person who is passionate about H20 cooling.

I will say this; the Hydra is a great product.

I think it would be hard to start one of the largest and most successful watercooling companies if you weren't passionate about it. That is my take.
 
It looks nice but that's a lot of money. It's perfect for what I was looking for but at that one unit costs just about as much as my entire setup does.

well i am going to have to take offense there. I helped design and test a lot of their more recent products, and would like to think i was instrumental in helping them move to this pump. I am VERY passionate about watercooling, and I know for a fact that everyone involved with design at Koolance is just as passionate. Peter Cheon (the President and founder of Koolance) is probably the most passionate personality in water-cooling today. If you knew these people you wouldnt even think they didnt care or just threw this stuff together. I think Koolance has done a lot for the DIY watercooler over the past year by pretty much opening their entire parts catalog to the public. When I first started there you pretty much had to have a broken Koolance system to get a part separate. If you look on their site now, they have every piece down to fittings and screws available. I think you are confusing what you think Koolance is about with what Koolance really is today.

Well side, the Exos 2 did get some good reviews. I would have purchased one if it had 1/2" ID with a stronger pump. I am not trying to knock your product, not in the slightest. Koolance was/still is the only all in one system that I think highly of...way better then Big Water 754 IMO.
But and yes there is a but in all this...the price. Although the price for the unit is well worth it. Most DIYs simply don't have that kind of cash. Specially when they educate themselves on rads, pumps, tubing (better vs worst) and for the most part (from what I read in forums) the only major concern is "price with what you get". I could be wrong in saying this as I don't represent the whole body of DIY WC'ers and my experience with Koolance is limited (compared to you) however, IMHO if the Exos-2 or 3 came with a 1/2" ID barbs/tubing, a stronger pump with WB that create turbulance at the point where heat is transfered (not just a simply flow rate...water in/.water out. But create like a washing machine effect inside the WB where heat is transfered) at roughly the same price point it might attract even more customers. Creating stronger brand loyality.
 
i dont want to get into the 1/2" vs 3/8" battle but the fact is that there is very little if any difference in performance. I will say however that the blocks all perform very well with the DDC pump. I think you would be very surprised by the amount of turbulence generated by the pyramids inside the block. I wont argue price either but i would like to point out the 24k gold plating on all the copper pieces, excelent crome plating on all the brass fittings, and the use of high grade aluminum in places where plastic or stamped steel would have done just as well. Having worked there I can also say that i would classify their customers as anything but typical DIY'ers. Their customers are the type that are willing to pay more for excelent build quality and styling. the average customer I talked to had multiple processors, enormous RAID arrays, CAD VGA cards, and typically unlimited budgets. No joke, that was at least half the people i talked to everyday.
 
Oh no, you get no arguement from me about 1/2", 3/8" tube war. Let me clarify..there are a lot of DIYs that use 1/2"barbs, be it do to ignorance or not. What I am saying is (from a business prospective) to home in on that audience with 1/2" barb/tubed, Exos-3 (for example). The reason is not because of hoses but because they can use the current WBs they already have. I have a Maze4 (just a personal preference as it does the job well). I am sure your version will work just as good but I paid good money for that WB. I also have plans on getting a Storm for the CPU as well. If your company can get your Exos series to work well with (in your eyes) aftermarket parts you could establish better brand loyality to your product (again just my opinion). I understand you cannot waranty damage as the result of a defective Storm/Maze4 and the customer must go to them for help. However, if your team (who is very detail oriented) took this into consideration I can see outstanding reviews in your future.

To me paying $300+ for a all in one sounds much more attractive to me when I can keep the current 1/2" barb WBs I have. And, still obtain a better level of performance through your system then what I currently have and can close my case again, you should see a wider audience IMO. This is far better then having to re-buy separate WBs for my CPU/GPUs hoping I can sell them on Ebay. I can take the hit on the rad/pump but rad, pump, tubing, WBs + $300 is why I didn't buy the Exos-2. Maybe you do have 1/2" tubes and barbs and, I simply mis-read the specs on the Exos-2 but I just didn't see those options clearly. This is why I taking the time to write to you. Hoping this can be changed in the future. Just my 2 coppers worth.

As you ca see I am sure your Exos-2 can do just as good but I still like to keep some of my hardware...
 
aside from my pump every barb in my CPU loop is 1/2". I prefer the clampless look of 3/8" stretched over 1/2" barbs. I totaly agree with you on the marketing standpoint, and actually made that argument numerous times while there.(please note the past tense) I do NOT work for Koolance anymore, and haven't for about a year. I do however still use and endorse a large margin of their product line. I am also in the process of setting up my own WC webstore with a selection of gear from all kinds of companies including Koolance.

I just received the Koolance RP-1000SL from your new webstore, www.wccustompc.com. Thanks for making sure that it was the latest version. The fact that you took the precaution of inspecting the product instead of simply allowing Koolance to drop-ship it sight-unseen is a service to your customers. Included in the package was a specially requested 10mm coil stent that can be used to prevent tube kinking. I will certainly consider your company when ordering any water cooling product. Your service rocks!

To answer an earlier posted concern, the RP-1000 requires that it be pulled out by 2.5" for filling. Compared to the MCRES-1000P, this appears to be a simpler task. The MCRES-1000P requires that a faceplate or monitor/controller be removed prior to pulling it out for filling. In contrast, the RP-1000 has an integral display that slides out as a part of the assembly.

Regarding quality, while the initial version of the RP-1000 may have not have been optimized, it is refreshing to see that Koolance has improved this product. Unlike the earlier version, this version includes a knob at the back to control the pump speed.

Regarding tubing size, the Koolance fittings support 10mmID x 14mmOD tubing. I've just received metric Tygon tubing of this size from Sidewinder Computers. It has a slightly larger ID than 3/8" ID tubing. Compared to 3/8" x 1/2" tubing, it also has a slightly thicker wall and a smaller bend radius.
