Known errors with XFX 6600GT & HL2?

Put the card in today and now HL2 will not run. I had a 9800pro here at work and had no problems. I ran drivercleaner, etc...before install.

Work rig is not oc'd at all. Sempron 2400, 8K3AE, 512 Kingston pc4000
 
"will not run" is about as non-specific as you can get
 
as in..you click on play game...it loads..select load game or new game.. then the system reboots.
 
That comes up just fine. It is just if you try and select anything.

I have searched and can not find any good info on this. One site talked about a guy with issues with XFX and HL2 and all of the replies were about how crapy XFX is and rma the card. THis was only one thread I could find.
 
might be a PSU issue. When your graphic gets intensive obviously it is not capable of the power that the 6600 requires. what psu are you using?
 
i thought 66GTs didnt have the extra power plug..... i think its a driver problem...

doesn't matter if it has the power plug or not....it is still a higher consuming gpu than whatever he had.
 
You might try deleting the "ClientRegistry.blob" file in your steam directory.(HL2 should rebuild it). But it does kind of sound like a driver problem of some sort. I'd test other dames and see how they fare.
 
Doubt it is PSU, I was runing my XT/PE in it this morning and all was fine. I cleaned the drivers out very well...multiple times infact, jsut to make sure. I have tried the drivers off of the disk and the latest drivers from Nvidia.

Work rig is what is listed up top.

The XFX one certainly does. Pretty sure they all do, since everyone stayed pretty true to nVidia reference designs.

My XFX 6600GT runs HL2 with no problems whatsoever.

OMF!! Tha is the problem. I did not even notice it. I am use to ATi giving you that error message if your card is not plugged in. I am such a :tard:..but new to Nvidia, so its fits :p

The AGP version has a molex plug, but the PCI-E version does not since the slot provides up to 75W. An AGP slot only provides around 30W.

knew it was a power issue. wasn't the power supply but still not getting enough power to the video card because the molex wasn't plugged in. i assumed you had it plugged in =P
 
I am suprised how much better the 6600GT runs HL2 then the 9800Pro that was in this rig. I also love the digital vibrance thing for your desk top, cool. Wish ATi had that feature..would not trade my XT/PE for anything with the option, but still :D

So far I am at 586 / 1.17..IS this a good oc for the card?
 
I topped out at 582/1.21 or something very close to that as I recall.
I think your core is higher than I got. Try to squeeze some more out of the memory!
My best 3dmark 05 was 3675 with my 2.8c@ 3.1 and the 66gt at the 582/1.21 + -
 
Is that with stock cooling? Are there any aftermarket coolers out there that are worth it for this card?

Yes. I have the "new" version of the hsf from XFX.
Idles at 50, cant really tell how hot it gets cranked because I don't have temperature monitoring software accesable during gameplay or 3dmark.
However accessing the temp readout as quickly as possible in nvidia properties shows no problems and I have experienced no gaming problems.
I will probably look for a Zalman hsf for it when the time comes.
I love this card.
 
What is the new version? I have a big silver one with a copper base on it.
 
That's the newest one.
There was an earlier hsf but this one is supposed to be 20% cooler according to their website.

I had that EXACT same problem.. It would just reboot after about 2 seconds into the game. Oh well.. the card is awesome though, now I'm cpu limited :)
 
haha, I was just sitting here thinking "Did he out in the power plug?"

Quite a common mistake, dont worry about it.
 
Strange, I had the powerplug out on accident while unplugging some case fans, and upon bootup windows notified me that I had low power to my vid card. Doesn't anyone else get this?

Another note, some people here are idling at about 50 with the new HSF? I get a lower idle (45-48) with the OLD one! Doesn't seem like the new one is 20% cooler....

I've heard that the older hsf worked well also.
I idle at 50-51 with the new one.
While your idle temp is excellent with the older hsf indicating it's design and implementaion was more than adequate, comparing temps is unreliable and inaccurate unless systems[fans,airflow etc] are identical.
Was that a runon sentence? :)
I haven't ran without the powerplug so no warning here.
