After I read about using k'nex as standoffs for a wood computer case a few threads down, I had an idea. Why don't I try building a computer case out of k'nex? I've seen lego cases, so why not? It would probably offer pretty good airflow as all the parts are open. Can anybody think of any things I may need to take into consideration?
 
I don't think K'NEX is sturdy enough to be the framework for holding computer components.

I can build a strong enough structure for it, and I would probably do a desktop oriented design, with the motherboard laying flat. I used to see how strong I could make my knex stuff, and I would stack books and weights on top of frames that I had made. I've built ones that could support a computer easy
 
That's an awsome idea, you can definitly build KNex to support it if done right. I actualy wanna do that too now :)
 
Hahaha, this would be leet. I can totally see k'nex doing a computer case. It can be done, if you do it right, k'nex are very very strong.
 
I built a case out of KNEX a few years ago that was strong enough to house the computer's components, and have the monitor placed on top. It wasnt any feat of engineering either. I used to have pics but they seem to have been lost in the sands of time :(
 
You could build it out of Knex pretty easily, just try & keep the lenghth between connecters short and it should hold a lot of weight. Im assuming youll snap the pieces to the connectors perpendicular so things wont slip out. Cool idea, literally :D I also might want to try this sometime, it sure would be easy to add space for an extra hard drive/whatever :cool:

Gawd I love these things. I went a bit obsessive on one at one point and built an 8ft tall(damn ceiling) tower with enough interlocking bits + extraneous structures to weigh a good 20lbs or so. A bit of a feat when you're 7 or 8.

You could EASILY make a computer case strong enough out of these. Setting a CRT on top of it would take some doing, but a computer case, no problem.
 
just build a grid of trusses and it will be plenty strong to hold a CRT.

it really wouldnt be hard.

all you need to do:
use short pieces, connected close together
use many triangles (stongest shape... so im told... :rolleyes: )

i think i might do that.

k'nex mini, here i come.... :D

another thing to think about: k'nex are all plastic. that means you can use the pieces anywhere to support anything, and theres absolutely no chance that anythings gonna fry. brilliant idea. :cool:
 
Ive already started on mine, building a mobo tray using the white & dark blue big pieces(ran out of white :() with the tiny green things & diagonal white lengths olding things together. Then I just ziptied the mobo (old K7S5A XP) to the grid thing. I also just made a totally crazy ghetto Knex thing to hold an 80mm fan over the cpu heatsink. Its crazy, but it works :-D

I'll be starting on mine as soon as I can find my old boxes of knex. I think I may be able to construct a mortorized rig that rotates several 80mm fans over the entire setup.

now thats a great idea. think about it... have an 80mm fan moving up and down, cooling HDDs and CD drives. great idea
 
This think will be insane if I can find my chain links that I had from the roller coaster. I could have a spinning caterpiller tread over the top of it with fans attached. The hard part would be figuring out what do do with the wires.
 
Bringing back good old memories of Knex lol. I have/built every single huge thing they had back in the day.

it will be able to support every computer component you throw at it (assuming your not gonna throw an XP-120 or the like at it :rolleyes:

then again...you could use it..since a HDD weighs about as much AND its gonna be a desktop design.

but seriously......knex can hold alot of weight if built right....

i had to do a project for school where we had to build something out of some cheap knex knockoffs (kind of like those lego knockoffs.....except knex) and the person that could build a structure to hold the most weight would get no homework for a week (read: this was back in 5th grade.....)

i lost...but the winner made a structure that could hold about 15-20 pounds (we ran out of weights...didnt expect it to go that high)
