Klipsch Promedia 2.1 quality issues?

Alrighty... I am looking for a 2.1 system with decent power. Most of the Altec and Logitec have mediocre output and range for a 2.1 system, so I am researching the Klipsch 2.1's

I have seen a ton of posts on the Klipsch forums regarding blown subs and other various issues.

I would like these to last as my old Altec Lansings that have lasted since '99.

I need more opinions, please.

I've been using my old Klipsch promedia 4.1's for 3 years and I've had absolutly no problems. A few times I have run at full volume and full sub for hours at a time. Also, check out klipsch.com in the refurb section, I got mine there for 100.

I believe the biggest issues Klipsch had were with their amps dieing on the 5.1 lines of speakers. I have a friend that bought second hand Klipsch 2.1's a couple of years ago and they are still running great.

Also, for some reason (which may be nothing more than skewed perception) his 2.1's sound better than my Klipsch 5.1's. (He's running a SBLive! and I an Audigy 1 - so the source isn't an excuse).

I fully recommend the Klipsch 2.1's. They usually run about $150, but they were $130 a couple of months ago on Newegg, so you might shop around. Or just buy them used

-edit- Almost forgot, recently the Altec Lansing MX5021 have been gaining a good reputation also. They are in the same price range (they cost $130) as the Klipsch 2.1's and it's a real toss-up on these forums as to which sound better. Might look into those, and demo the speakers at a B&M store if you can.

One big advantage of the Altec Lansings over the Klipsch is that the power switch is on the control pod; Klipsch 2.1's have the power switch on the back of the subwoofer, which is a great annoyance to many users.

The power switch is the least of my concerns as I have had my altecs running non-stop for 5 years.

I am thinking maybe the refurbs might be better because Klipsch fixed the inherent design flaws with the amp? Numerous reports indicate insufficient caps and fuses in the sub. Also, is the control pod, attached to the satellite, poorly constructed? I noticed @ BB that the knobs had a lot of play.

Just from listening @ BB you can tell theses are a step above all the other models.

I've had my Klipsch 2.1's for about a year now and I love them. The only issue I ever had was the first set I purchased had a dead subwoofer, in which I promptly exchanged them and haven't had an issue since.

They get quite a bit of use, I might add, with them being powered usually 24/7.

I had Promedia Ultra 5.1 for 2 years and a week when the amp failed. Many others have had amp failures too. I believe this is isolated to the 5.1 sets.

For *most* Music Playback 2.1 sounds better than 5.1. Set your speakers and card to 2.1 and then compare. Though I still think the Audigy 1 sucks. I'd find at least a Cheap Audigy 2.

I personally have seen 7 different sets Computer Speakers not last more that 15 months. I have dead sets of Logitech 560z "Control Pod" and Creative Labs Megaworks 650 6.1 "just stopped playing". I'm very happy with even my Mid-Fi Pioneer Receiver and real speakers. EBay, Pawn Shop, online Refrub and even Open Box can produce amazing deals.

I haven't noticed any quality issues with my set of 2.1s...I've had them for three years now.
Just thought I'd put in my two cents for klipsch....damn good set of speakers!
