Klipsch Promedia 2.1 Problem

Alright trying to figure out what is wrong with my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speakers. I've had the speakers for about 6 years now.

When the volume is turned all the way down on the speakers, i can hear a distorted sound (e.g. music that is distorted) coming out of them. Then when i turn the volume up I can't hear any sound at all. Is it a problem with the power control on the speakers? If so any way to fix it? If not any recommendations on a replacement? I mainly listen to music and watch movies with a little gaming here and there. I was looking at the Swan M10 and M12, but the frequency response only gets down to 40 and 50hz respectively.

6 years? Wow... outstanding. And yes, there is a well known issue with the volume control on the speaker pod (it's removable, in case you didn't know - it slides off the bottom of the speaker). Apparently Klipsch chose a rather shoddy volume control/potentiometer supplier for that particular part, and what you end up getting is either a lot of crackling static when you adjust it, or over time the volume control just doesn't work at all.

Considering you've had yours for 6 years and apparently enjoyed them, unless your intention is to purchase an entirely new set of speakers, something more recent perhaps, I'd say the ~$30 to continue using the Promedias is a good investment.

I have a set myself, purchased for $20 because the previous owner tripped over the volume pod cords and literally ripped them out of the DIN jack on the sub. In the process the cord separated at the DIN plug and he just couldn't do that type of repair.

But I can. :)

So I used a PS/2 mouse cord from a Logitech ball mouse I had laying around and did a patchwork fix on the wiring based on the wiring diagram for the volume pod and DIN plug I found at the Klipsch support forums. Cost me an hour of soldering time and the $20 for the speakers.

Best deal I think I've had in years. At some point I'll just order a new volume pod myself because this set is now exhibiting the scratchy low volume, but it's not enough to make me toss 'em. They have great sound quality (I can see spaceman lurching over in pain right now) and that's all that matters to me.
 
Thanks for all the info. Never knew the control pod was removable. Decided to just go ahead and order a new control pod. Spending $30 to fix the speakers sounds much better to me than $100 for new ones. I've always been impressed by the sound quality of them for computer speakers, so as long as they kept working i'll keep using them!
