Can someone explain the differnces between the Promedia Ultra 5.1 system and the Promedia GMX D-5.1 system? Why the $200 difference and why would I want one over the other? BTW, I would us them for pretty much everything: games(hardcore), movies(generally at least one or two a week), and music(all the time). I don't have a whole lot of money right now and the GMX are only $160 refurbished, is there any reason to hold out untill I can afford the Promedia Ultra?

The difference is that the GMX are digital speakers, Meaning they are fed a digital signal via spdif coaxial or optical to an external decoder that converts the signal to analog and then passes the analog signal to the speakers. The sub is a single 6.5 inch front firing and rear vented. Amplifier power is 100 watts to the sub and 35 each to the satellites. They support only AC3 in 5.1Dolby Digital (which means only DVD audio). But they also support prologicII on all sources.
They are not for everyone, but they are not inferior or lo budget at all.
Read reviews. The only bad thing you will hear about the Ultras is lack of digital connectivity and the price. The sound is incredible.
The GMX, however, gets bad reviews for volume and sound. They were meant to be a cheaper multimedia alternative for use with console systems, but they aren't worth the money you will waste on them.

DIGITAL CONNECTIVITY is useful only for Soundstorm owners- that's nforce/XBOX only guys. Otherwise, it's a pathetic marketing gimmick, and useless to PC owners- they will only be able to use them as 2.1 speakers. It's the same as using a hometheater reciever, except with less expensive DAC's. If the GMX's don't have an analog input, then that is pretty pathetic. They would make great desktop speakers, FEW people ever realize the full power that the Ultra's have to offer- they could fill rooms orders of magnitude larger than what most of us game in.
I said in my original post that they are not for everyone, but they do not sound as bad as you are making them out to sound, and considering
a. they are available for $129.00 on ebay, compared to 330.00 to 399.00
b. They use the same drivers as the ultras (with the addition of the phase plug). the only difference being the cabinet.
c. The sound they produce comes closer to the promedias than logitech, or cambridge.
They are as good a value as any for computer speakers. For serious music listening, I use my Thiel Audio CS3.5's that Ive owned since 1990 and HSU subs.

that cabinet is a big part of the sound though...there's a lot of science behind the cabinet design and the effect it has on the driver itself.
If you put a absolute shit speaker in a nice cabinet, it can possibly sound on par with a great speaker in a crap cabinet. I'm not kidding either...i used to make my own shelf speakers using car coaxials that often sounded better than the quick slap together setups my friends were doing using far more impressive drivers. It's all about hte design, and how it intereacts with that specific driver.
Given the GMX isn't bad...but it's not great either...pretty much better than most in it's price range, with exception to the hi-fi stereo kits...but it's apples and oranges comparing a 5.1 setup to a stereo setup in teh same price range.
