Kinect + Netflix support in the future??

I have Kinect and a Netflix account. To my surprise there is no support with the two. It is a minor issue, but still I just assumed it would work together. For now I am content with Adventures, and Dance Central, but Netflix support would just be amazing. I also noticed it does not work with DVD playback either, so much so, that when a DVD is playing, the Kinect sensor seems to shut down entirely.

Do you think there is a reason for the lack of support? It works fine with the the Zune player, (which I am assuming that microsoft intended so that we would purchase content) so for it not to work with Netflix is strange to me. Anyone else surprised at this or am I the only one who thinks this??

I think it depends on both Netflix and Microsoft. Its hard to say though. MS needs to make the entire 360 dashboard work with Kinect.

It doesn't surprise me, but its really too bad that some of the stuff MS was promising with Kinect isn't possible yet most likely would if they didn't want to make nearly $100 profit on every one sold.

I swear in the videos Netflix is one of the things they advertise as being supported. If that's the case perhaps we will see an update to support it soon.

It was. Of course they also talked about more advanced body tracking, being able to scan almost any item into it. And you still can't sit down and play any of the games can you?

To be fair, getting off the couch is one of their main pitches for the Kinect, so it's not surprising that the launch titles all require that you stand up and move around. As far as scanning objects in, I remember seeing that in some early videos, but I haven't heard anything about it since then. It's likely the case that this feature was dropped, but considering it just launched last week, there's also a chance that it's just a product of none of the games supporting it yet (however unlikely this may be). The more advanced body tracking probably got dropped when the processor built into Kinect got dropped to save money on production costs.

The Kinect can scan items, to a point. They require a special IR tag though. Kinectimals uses it. The Kinect could have been a lot more advanced. It could have had the ability to track fingers, instead Microsoft wanted to save money and make the thing only cost $58 per unit.

yea thats becoming a common thing with producers now a days... if you notice how now, common items will break or wear out mcuh easier than they used too. my mom has had the same tube tv for the past 22 years while lcd tvs die out in 5 years. if things die out sooner then we need to buy more therefore allowing the companies to make more money.

its sucks to see greed get in the way of an awesome product. and if they had made it better they probably would have sold more.

I have no problem with them wanting to make a good profit on the thing, its just too bad they couldn't spend another $5-$10 per unit to make it a lot better than it is now.

im not against profit either. im against it when they make a cheap product to make more money as opposed to a higher quality product. It just shows where the CEO's priorities are:

money vs. customer

Yeah. Maybe they're saving that "specular new innovative technology" for the next generation of Kinect, likely included with the next Xbox.

Keep in mind the Netflix app on the 360 is Silverlight based and would need to be completely rewritten or a secondary app for Kinect only would need to be in place with Kinect APIs. I would assume Netflix support is coming, its one of the driving features on the 360.

Time.

I worry about its future in general. I see no other games coming out yet that will jump on it. Netflix support is an easy fix i would say.

Huh? Did you not see all the core games announced for it at Tokyo Game Show? And let us not forget that the majority publishers said (last year) they have Kinect games 'in development'.

MS is treating Kinect as a new console launch, its going to have sustained software, and I would gather by this time next year more titles will be out and we'll know about more in the pipe (as with any launch)

i didnt see the show acctually if you dont mind posting some here . im very interested

The majority of the reasoning for the cheaper units was the first prototypes had there own processing units (so there own CPU , insteaad of going this route they choose to let the 360 do the processing) and where able to do more things like tracking fingers and more advanced tracking.

It would have been a smarter choice but they would have had to charge around 200+ to make it viable financially. While it may seem like 58 bucks per unit is a great deal of profit for MS you have to take into account R&D , 500 million dollars in marketing.

True, though they're also getting money from every Kinect game sold. So a few hit games, if the Kinect gets good popularity, will help cover a lot. Still I hope they have that ability in the next generation of Kinect.
