Does anyone have a Kindle DX? I can't stand the small screen on the regular Kindle, but I'm thinking the DX might be acceptable. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

kindle 2 screen i thought was acceptable, i returned a sony daily reader (7in) and it was really only 1in longer than the kindle 2, but you could see the screen space was still there. Is it going to be for pdf and such?

No pdf. Just for reading regular books.

How long did you try it for?

Most people I show mine to complain about that at first (I have a Kindle 2) but I tell them to read for a few pages. When they're done, they don't even notice the screen size. Most people adjust to it very quickly.

I have a kindle dx; the screen is pretty nice, definitely big enough for me. All I read is pdfs on it, but I never have to zoom or anything. It's even better if you're reading books you download from amazon since you can change text size and such. I feel like it's a bit overpriced (now that you can get a 6" for $139), but there isn't anything better right now if you need a large ereader since it has the new eink screen. If you can wait a few months the pocket book 901, or maybe even the notion ink adam could be better choices. You can always try it for 30 days and return it if you don't like it.

Exactly what I did. It comes today, and I'm going on vacation on Monday, so it'll be a good chance to see what it's like. I thought it was over priced too, but I was obsessing, so it was just simpler to buy it:eek:

i sent my fiance to cancun w/ the girlfriends this week, she's been tellin me the K2 i got her was wonderful on the beach. (plus i don't think anyone would ever bring a dx when they travel, just so big!)

Just to close any loose threads (ha, ha), the Kindle DX is great. Yes, it is heavy and big, but it's still easier and lighter than carrying more than 2 books on vacation. Can be read comfortably enough in bed, but you need the cover to be able to attach a booklight. Plus, you can't beat all those free books that I would never have read otherwise.

Update:

For anyone who cares or is considering whether to buy a DX, I ended up deciding to return it, and to get the new smaller Kindle instead. So what changed since my last post? Well, on vacation, when reading in bed, I was so tired that I didn't read for very long. Now I find that after about 1/2 hour, the DX plus the cover plus the booklight becomes very heavy becomes very difficult to hold. So I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who reads for an extended period of time.

well, for me as a college student with a lot of PDFs from professors, the DX is worth it...

I tried the K2 over the summer, was too small for PDFs(zoom was still complicated/small), fine with regular fiction. Friend has a DX, looks a lot better. I'm getting my Graphite next week... woot :D

but yeah, the DX is significantly heavier than

For fiction and non-fiction novels, the Kindle 2 (or 3) is just fine. If you want a reader for technical manuals and study guides, then you've got to step up to the Kindle DX.

great post. I've gotten several pdf's (not with a lot of graphics or tables) just pdfs

is the dx still required?

You can read PDF files on the Kindles, all of them, but the original model requires conversion. I believe the 2nd gen as well as the DX gained the ability to open PDF files with one of the last updates they all received; the original because of its age simply can't do it internally, hence Amazon's conversion service which is free as long as you email it back to yourself instead of using Whispernet to transfer the converted file.

Since PDFs aren't technically "text" content that's what typically makes them impractical on screens that are so small that a) you can't see the whole file because the screens are so small and b) because those small screens don't offer a high enough resolution to fit all the content anyway, hence the reason for the Kindle DX getting the nod for PDFs almost always.

If it just wasn't so damned expensive I'd love to have one myself but, for what the Kindle DX offers, I'd rather just spend ~$300 or so on that Archos 101 Android Tablet coming in a few weeks and get a lot more functional capabilities (and still save money compared to getting an iPad which is $500+ to get into it).

For me, Kindle 2 has the perfect screen, size.
Only con is I can't make it pronounce words from dictionary.
