Just got a 9600XT, mainly because I don't have a stout enuff PSU and didn't want the cost of putting a new one in... (i know, not that expensive, but gotta watch the pennies). I still have time to return the 9600XT and get a 9800 Pro for about 10 bucks more... Anyone forsee a problem with using 2 separate power supplies on one machine? My friend has an old PSU that he isn't using and I thought about just using that on the 9800 and keeping the other one in the puter as it is now.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

(told you it was a weird solution)

250w, P4 1.8, 512mb, 80GB WD, 2 Optical drives, 1.44 floppy, SB Audigy 2, (right now) 9600XT w/ 128

To me, doesn't seem like enuff to cram the 9800 in there.

it could work...

i see no reason why running 2 PSUs would be detrimental to your system, except with the possibility that you have 2 chances for a PSU fsck up.

2 PSUs on one computer? at the same time? i thought that the PSU needed to be connected to the mobo to provide power to any components.

Im not aware of anyway to connect to ATX PSU's on one computer. Go grab an Antec PSU from Bestuy for around $60 so You can run the 9800pro.

Great.. different answers.. I don't really wanna buy a new power supply there cheifton.... That's why I phrased the original thread that way. If I have to buy a new PSU, I'm probably not getting the 9800.... I have a wedding to pay for this fall (mine).

I guess I'll just stick to what I have as I don't wanna screw anything up really bad.

Thanks anyway.

forgot to put that I have a 40GB WD on the system too..... As for the PSU to the motherboard, yeah, that's so the computer's components will work. I would keep the original PSU to the motherboard, HDD's, and CDroms. The 2nd PSU would go directly to the Video Card.

I have 2 psu's in my comp and I don't have any problems at all the only thing you have to do is use an old AT style psu vs a newer ATX. I will work fine just plug one or two of your hdd on your AT power supply or some other component .... personally all my fans are on my second but....you should be fine.

why not run the drives and fans off the second at style psu and the 9800 and mb off the original?

This way you don't have to worry so much about timing when turning them both on (I suppose you could mod them, use the AT switch and a relay to turn on the ATX...)

I'd be worried about supplying power to the mb & vid card and THEN turning on more juice to the molex on the vid card AFTER the mb is already fired up.

but then again...there may be no danger at all....

oh and if I were you, I'd get the 9800 for $10 more....powersupply or not You'd be silly not to.

you can use an ATX PSU but you have to jumper 2 pins so it thinks it is connected to a mother board

GOT IT FIXED!!! Newegg is ready to ship my Sapphire 9800 Pro, and Thermaltake 360W PSU. I said, hell with it.. might as well. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
