If I want to kill my PC with no Physical evidence how could I do it? Would disconecting the stock HSF on a northwood 1st gen P4 kill it? Jeff
 
I'd say get a spray bottle, and spray some water on it while it's running.....Then just stick it in front of a fan afterwards for quite awhile and it'll dry that water right out....
 
why are u wanting to.....i dont know about that^^^ but maybe do sumthing with electricity...
 
Well they said with no physical damage.....So it wouldn't leave any traces behind....
 
just cut the power on cable that conects to the mobo ;) My cousin did this 2 years ago cuz he wanted to get a new pc and it worked:) Just make sure you dont make it too obivious
 
I was thinking something that DIDNT look like tampering LOL. Its not watergate people (no pun intended).

Water leaves behind evidence - corrosion, so, that is no good.

Disconnecting the HSF might not do it, the northwood chips all have clock-throttling to save themselves if the HSF dies. You could try putting a paper clip into a couple of the pinholes in the CPU socket, then moving it around a couple times and keep trying to boot, good chance you'd short some circuits that way and the system wouldn't boot after...

EDIT: Or, just turn it on and off really fast repeatedly over and over and over until something blows or conks or crashes (I'm guessing you'd lose a disk first).
 
Doesnt reset+power sometimes screw up the bios :D
Either that or just screw up the update of a bios.
 
Wait got an idea....Bend a couple cpu pins, or break a copule of them off, then put it back in the socket, and put the pc back together....No one would know unless they pulled out the cpu, which is highly unlikely....Or scrape off a memory trace...Or try and scrape out the contacts of your ram, pci, or graphics slots......
 
Depending on who you need to convince you could mess with the MBR too. That way a non-tech person(parents perhaps...) would think it was dead, but the hardware would be salvagable.
 
Or wait put foil around the ram traces, and your pci/agp card traces...Boot up the comp, it should smoke...Then take the foil off and throw it away...
 
What is the MBR? the MObo is crap anyways.

1024mb PC800-40 RDRAM
9800 XT OC stable at 450/800
Generic sony mobo
Vaio hardware other...
I want to salvage the TV Card... prolly sell the graphics ram etc...

MBR == Master Boot Record
If it gets messed up then the computer wont boot properly. It will still turn on, so it wont look like a complete meltdown though.
 
yeah. i know how that is lol. Ill try a few things, more than likely this PC will go home and Ill build a new rig. Based on the above specs will i notice a huge diff with

3800 X2
Biostar Geforce6100
2 gig XMS
7800GT OC eVGA or 7800GTX OC

Now the dilemma. Should I wait for the X1800XT.... will it even fit in the X Qpack and is it worht the extra 200? Randy? anyone? bueler? bueler?

Wow, don't kill that, it looks like a decent system. Why were you wanting to anyway, have some kind of replacement plan on it?

If not, and it is just going to go to waste somewhere, I might be interestetd in buying it off of you.

For a new system: I'd take an X1800XL or XT over a 7800GTX anyday.

Start a bios update.
After the BIOS is cleared, and before the new BIOS is written to the chip, pull the power plug. :D
 
yea i owuld buy it off of u also..

but i have a question about the water thing....well if it is pure water H2O then it wouldnt conduct electricity right? cuz i remember in a chem class we did this and it wouldnt conduct electricity....but if it is regular tap water that has impurities in it like sodium than yea it would conduct electricity

how about you buy a M98 explosive.. i've got a lot of them right with me but i cant send you none :rolleyes: but get one and plant it inside and put the case cover as quicky as you can and runnn!!! and dont forget the video cam! :D
 
I might just keep it for a home computer guys. I can only get 30 fps at BF2 1280x1024 with 6AA and all High except shadows and lighting. Load times are forever and it stutters when it gets intense. I am looking for 60fps min all the time. PM me with an offer. If you want to look it up its a Sony PCV-RX790G.
 
change the psu to 220v.. that should take out the psu and mobo..

or sell it to me $51 .. (that's a dollar more than the other guy offered)
 
If it's your boss you're hiding from, don't do it.

If it's your wife/girlfriend, just disconnect the power wire from the button. Tell her it won't turn on, buy another, then magically make it work again later. Then install F@H on it, and stick it running headless in the corner for a rainy day
 
ummm take off the cpu heatsink and turn on your computer and if it hasn't already died by then then just leave it running.
 
o man thats terrible killing a pc on purpose, makes u want to cry ;-;

hm but if ur going to do it anyways i dono try disassembling it while its on, just dont get electrocuted LoL

p4 s have thermal throttling.. if you don't put the hsf on, it will shut off due to that before the cpu get's killed.. that was one of the big things, before HT that intel had on amd..
 
Maybe even messing with some of the electronics from underneath the mobo. Turn a tesla coil on right next to it and fry a few caps. :) Again, be sure to tape that one.
I'm with everybody else though that's not a shabby machine depending upon your motives for trashing it.
 
i think the answer is pretty obvious:

get some fuzzy slippers, scuff around on the carpet for a while then touch the cpu :)

then send me the videocard as a reward for such a great suggestion :D
