Keyboard: Microsoft Wired Keyboard 200
Mouse: Logitech MX518

My keyboard and mouse both die at the same time. The devices will still get power as the keyboard LEDs and mouse LED remain lit, but they won't respond to any input. During a period of unresponsiveness, even pushing the caps/num lock/scroll lock on the keyboard will not make the LEDs blink off.

Unplugging and replugging the keyboard/mouse cables into the same USB 2.0 ports has no effect. Plugging them into the two USB 3.0 ports on the back of my case often results in unresponsiveness. Plugging them into the USB 3.0 ports on the front of my case, however, makes them responsive for a while (a random amount of time, sometimes a few hours and sometimes a few days) before they turn unresponsive. Rebooting the computer always fixes the issue but the problem comes back after some random amount of time.

I replaced the motherboard and reformatted again. I haven't tried any gaming yet but just now my keyboard and mouse both died at the same time.

I've checked Battery & Power in the control panel and set it to High performance and USB to 'never sleep' on both the new and the old motherboard. Replacing the motherboard ruled out a USB controller issue so it has to be a driver issue, but I really don't know what it could be as I'm using the default Windows USB device / HID drivers that I've always used. I've checked Event Viewer and I don't see any sort of USB device or PnP issues. Any ideas?

This is likely a problem with your keyboard or mouse. A lot of times I have found flakey devices can cause the symptoms you're talking about. I assumed from drawing too much current or bad levels on the usb data pins. I think the USB controller shuts down to protect itself. Since you've ruled out everything else I would try a different keyboard and mouse for a while to see if that fixes the problem.

JoBUSH, I think you're right. I noticed that my MX518 has a bad USB cable because it loses power when bent too far. I switched out my mouse yesterday morning and so far so good. It's kind of strange because I can bend the MX518 cable and it'll lose power, but it'll come right back on and not lose responsiveness even if I bend it off/on a dozen times in a row. Oh well, you can't argue with results. I'll keep using this new mouse for a few more days and update the thread.

Yea, if the wire is coming apart in the cord it can cause all sorts of weird effects. That really just confirms it for me. Best of luck, keep us updated.
