Keyboard Lag Issue

Hello all,

Recently I did some cable management on my system, and upon boot up, I noticed some keyboard lag. Ever since then it has been driving me crazy. Let me throw out some attempts I tried:

Reformatted, tried multiple usb ports, tried multiple usb keyboards (all other usb peripherals are just fine), flashed the bios, installed a usb multiport to my mobo, fail fail fail fail. Basically I have tried everything. I ran UBCD and it threw some errors with the processor and usb controller, but I know it's not a great program for i7s.

Also, this problem happened for me in the past and a reformat fixed it. I believe I have ruled out everything. I am stuck with either: My LEGIT copy of windows 7 is tainted somehow? (no really I purchased it and everything!) OR motherboard. Please help its making my brain hurt and making me all grumpy and such :p

So is it lagging on boot (like 10 seconds or so?)

Or when you press a key is there lag in it receiving the command and showing up on the screen?

there is lag when a button is held, AND while typing.

updaaaaaaaaaaaate. so its probably not hardware. command prompt pre-windows it types fine. so its gotta be windows/other software...so what now LOL

Go into device manager and uninstall your USB stuff. Windows will automagically reinstall everything

This may sound crazy but what video card do you run? I ask because AMD software throws in a usb filter driver and depending on how I install new drivers (uninstall then reinstall rather than just update over the existing) it effects all my usb peripherals. In this case, it is for the good. I usually let Win 7 install its own thing but after I properly install Catalyst drivers, my usb devices seem snappier.

Just a thought.

Edit: I should clarify that this is with AMD chipsets.

USB itself can lag up keyboards if you have a lot of USB devices ( that's what I understand ). The solution is get a USB to PS/2 adaptor and plug the keyboard directly into the PS/2 port.

Keyboards that support N-Key rollover only do so over the PS/2 port.

I had the same problem as you, with a cheap Dynex keyboard.

The instruction manual said that sometimes a keypress would not show and to unplug and replug the USB keyboard. What would happen is that after plugging in the keyboard into the USB port, random keys would not seem to display. I would have to hold down those keys for a second or so, just to get that particular letter to display. If I unplugged and replugged in the USB keyboard, a different set of keys would take a second or so to display. After unplugging and replugging in 20 times, I got it to display keys without lag but a specific game would not work.

After buying a Filco, cherry brown from Elite Keyboards, I figured out that USB was actually the problem. Plugging in the keyboard into a PS/2 port was the solution.

well we will see if it is the number of usb devices (i doubt, its only 4 and a hub that rarely has anything plugged into it) or the motherboard come friday when my RMA comes in!

Update: So it turns out it wasnt the motherboard but hell, its still EVGA's fault (prolly not but whatever). The issue were the EVGA chipset drivers. Now I am just using whatever Win7 defaulted to and nooooo issues, smooth sailin. Interesting issue, but all solved.
