Keyboard and mouse question

Yeah, it's a pretty good one to keep in mind. It's about the size of a laptop keyboard so it doesn't take up half the coffee table or couch. And it is the first wireless keyboard I've used that actually works at more than 10 feet away without signal dropout. The built in mouse trackball works quite well too.

Does this keyboard require any software or is it just plug and play( as in can be used in BIOS?)

*EDIT* The reviews say no software necessary, although I have had issues in the past with an old wireless MS keyboard/mouse combo I had.

Yeah, it is just plug and play. It works fine in the bios on my Asus M2A-VM board. Also, the hotkeys on the keyboard work in WinXP and Vista with no software needed.

i just got the new apple wireless keyboard to use with my HTPC. Looks sharp on my coffee table. I would give it a consideration if you want small and wireless. Just understand you will be giving up a number pad, BUT, imho, it is totally worth it.

Can I get a link to that? And would I have any problems using it with the PC?

Thats not a G7 i believe

The grip goes to the back on one in picture, the G7 goes to the front

As for the G7, its a nice mouse, love the quick change battery and the fact you get 2, but it has its problems.
On mine the plastic where your fingers rest quickly discolored and became lumpy. Maybe i just used it far to much :D

There is a wireless and wired version. I am using the wireless version with a usb bluetooth dongle. Everything works EXCEPT the fn button and eject button. I have tried installing the bootcamp drivers like many people using the wired version, but am having no success. So, I just wrote a simple autohotkeys file to assign the fn key functions to the command/windows key (thus allowing page up, page down, delete, home, end, volume up, down, mute, pause, etc.). Hopefully as more people gain interest in this keyboard, someone will create a driver to recognize the missing 2 keys or get the correct driver from bootcamp.

Also, a few people are claiming some compatibility issues with their bluetooth stacks, but I had none. Even if you do have some problems, if you just replace them, and it should fix the problems.

This is working on a pc with xp, sp2.

dinovo edge FTW :D i have 2 and love em! it'll fit perfect w/ ur htpc and functions really well

Alright, I finally gave up on the damn wired mouse keyboard for HTPC application and picked up a BTC BTC 9019URFIII for $40 from Fry's. It's pretty slick w/ the joystick and notebook style keys. I'm only about 10 feet, but response seems good enough. It has the 2 mouse buttons on the left w/ the forgiving joystick, middle mouse button, and scrolling buttons on the right. A pretty ideal browsing layout IMO.

The only issues I have are a desire for a better "mousing" control on the board and a bit less cramped keyboard...right control would be nice. :( The Edge with it's trackpad looks the best and I'm sure it types great.

Here's a few others I found on the egg...what do you guys think?
$116.99 Logitech diNovo Edge

$49.99 SPEC Research 01030

***gave up on joystick, now using reg key/mous***

$79.99 Trust 14909

$39.99 Microsoft Remote ZV7-00009

The BTC works fine for casual HTPC, but the missing right ctrl key, cramped keyboard, and lack of lights to see since it's non standard make "foruming" the un fun. :(

EDIT:
No middle mouse, but the Logitech "PS3" keyboard looks nice.

im in the middle of researching the best kb/mouse combo as well. ive tried that microsoft media center keyboard. it looks nice and the kb works fine. the mousing sucks badly. you use a stupid nub that doesnt work half the time and you get a hand cramp trying to work even media center, never mind actual windows.i wanted a solid all-in-one solution with ease of use. i dont think we've progressed that far yet. htpc is still relatively new to the masses.

im seriously considering the microsoft 7000 set. id love the 8000 but its way out of my range. found it locally for $135CAD so i think im gonna pick it up in a few weeks.

I have a gyroscopic mouse and small 2.4 ghz keyboard combo. Works great.

Logitech has their new DiNovo Mini that looks pretty sweet & small. It has an integrated touchpad.
If you want something closer to remote size, but still a keyboard.

Have you looked at the 7000 and 8000 wireless desktops from Microsoft yet? I hear they are pretty solid and are designed exactly for your intended use.

Man you guys are making this hard on me. I still haven't gotten one yet. Money is always tight for me this time of year. I'm still catching up after Xmas. I'm still holding out and will probably get the vidabox that Wiretap posted. Although those microsoft ones posted are pretty hot. Thing is, I'll only use it maybe once a week.

I had the 7000 and returned in within an hour. Found a great deal on a diNovo Edge and haven't looked back since!

Mine does not work in the Bios.

But, the keyboard is very impressive. The range is incredible. It works from my bedroom area about 20 feet or so away without problems. It's very small and takes getting used to. It barely fits on my thighs and the mouse is EXTREMELY sensitive but it's very well constructed and does the job nicely after getting used to it.

Enable legacy USB support in your BIOS, then give it a try.

just picked up an MS Entertainment 7000 set today. so far so good. i just wish i had the baklighting....but im not paying 262 for lights lol.
