I have a slight problem I was wondering if any of you could help me with. When I plug in my keyboard the computer takes a really long time to boot. When it finally boots to xp pro both the keyboard and the mouse don’t work. But when i unplug the keyboard and just have the mouse attached the computer boots up just fine but locks up when i plug the keyboard in. Any one have any experience with a problem like this? I don’t get it. Thank you for your help.

Try plugging the keyboard into a different computer and see what happens. If it screws up the other computer, you prob got a bad keyboard. If it does ok on the other computer, your board is probably the cause. If you think it's your board, get a USB keyboard and try that (assuming the one you're currently using is PS2)

Just be careful plugging and unplugging PS/2 ports 'hot' with the computer on. Its rare, but you can toast the ports!

If you're working with USB, plug and unplug to your heart's content.

Anyway, I'd do as suggested above (try your kb on another pc) or I'd just borrow a keyboard and mouse from another system, and swap em in to figure out where the problem lies.

Like the other guy said, I blew two PS2 ports on motherboards in the past plugging in keyboards while the machines were on. Don't expect your motherboard to be any good if thats what you did. It's probably blown. One of those boards literally SMOKED and sparked! LOL...
A bunch of threads in this forum deal with troubleshooting and refer to issues with keyboard problems, so do a search and read up. Keyboards are cheap and easy to find, you could also just go get another one to test it out.
