Sorry for the long post, I tried to be detailed with all the info for the best possible solutions. Thanks for your patience.

So the computer has been running fine with no snags for a couple years now and yesterday I had done some major upgrading to the Software portion, Service Pack 1 on Win XP Pro.

Anywho, I dont think the Service Pack is the problem because all was running well after I did it all day as well as after several reboots.

I also have on my machine Norton Systemworks. Now I know a lot of you may or may not like it, but I have been running it for years with no problems. So anyway, today I was doing some routine maintenance as I have done in the past such as windoctor and disk doctor. It had been a couple weeks since I had done this and I figured since I shocked the system with the service pack it may need it.

Prior to doing the above, I had opened up Internet Options and deleted my cookies, temp files and internet history. I also went into the taskbar and start menu options in the control panel and deleted my recent documents.

Upon reboot I noticed in the recent documents menu that there were 2 items. Some reference to Quickbooks and another reference to Adobe Gamma Loader. Not sure why there were there as I have never seen them before. Both files ended with the extension .ink I deleted them out of the recent documents menu.

Finally, when I got all the above finished I rebooted the machine and when it came back up the mouse didnt work. (USB Logitech optical scroll mouse) Not only did the cursor on the screen not move, the infrared light was not coming on (no power?) I proceeded to use the keyboard commands to navigate into the device manager and sure enough it was in there and had the yellow exclamation. The USB devices were fine though. I found my driver install CD and reinstalled the driver and rebooted again. I got my mouse back!

I remember something about my mouse before and using the Logitech drivers that came with it having problems in Win XP, or perhaps I read about it somewhere, so I decided to go to the Logitech website and check for updates. I found a new driver that is supposed to work and be designed for Win XP, which was a newer version that the one I have. Needless to say I d/l the driver and proceeded to install. As the new driver was installing it recognized that I had previously installed Logitech drivers and was prompted that they be cleaned up before the new install could take place. I told the prompt yes to clean them up and proceed. After I did that I was told the system needed to reboot and then the install would continue.

Heres where the problem comes in. After the system rebooted the drivers did not continue to load, and my mouse and keyboard both did not work! The infrared on the mouse was working, so I know it has power and the lights on the keyboard work so it has power as well. I decided to do a hard boot since nothing else was working and I proceeded to hit F8 to get into the boot options menu. The first option I chose was Safe Made to see if I could roll the driver back, or set it to a Microsoft driver. As the Safe Mode boot loaded I found my self at the Windows log on screen and again my keyboard and mouse did not work, so I couldnt do anything again.

At this point I did another hard boot and proceeded to press F8 again to the boot options and this time I told the system to boot to a previously good configuration. Again, no mouse and no keyboard. After I had done that I rebooted again and hit my DEL key to go into my bios just to make sure nothing funny happened there. The PS2 mouse was set to auto and the USB funtion was enabled and everything else looked good as well. I have been in my bios many times and pretty much know all the settings and there was nothing out of the norm on this visit either. After looking in the bios I exited without saving since I didnt cahange anything and I rebooted again. No Mouse and No Keyboard.

I tried to reboot one more time into the boot options thinking perhaps I could boot into command prompt mode, but no dice.

I really seem to be stuck here and dont know what to do. Formatting at this point is not an option for me as I have too much data to lose on the drive.

Thanks for listening and please fire away the suggestions.

one suggestion... do you have the usb to ps2 converter? use that on the mouse, that usually is a sure fire way to get the mouse to work, you failed to mention if the keyboard is usb or ps2, if its usb do the same thing, if not try unplugging and plugging it back in to the ps2 port when you get to the log on screen, and do the same for the mouse but put it in a differnt usb port if you don't have the converter any more, another suggestion just go buy a cheap mouse and key board, i know we sell them at best buy (GE) for like 5 bucks for the mouse and 10 for the keyboard... thats a couple of suggestions, another suggestion would be to reinstall your USB drivers on your mother board.... sorry about your misfourtune.... that does suck when that happens, my mouse wasn't working a while ago, im going to feel like an idiot telling you this, but it wasn't plugged in all the way in the usb port:D ..hhaha, good luck

I do not have an adapter.

the keyboard is PS2 and the mouse is USB. My computer only has 2 USB ports on it and when i plugged it into the other one, the mouse was detected but the drivers would not load and I couldnt type or click anything to help it :(

do you have an old ps2 mouse lyin around that you can test out? if you go down to best buy, circut city, compUSA, etc, im sure they would be able to just give you a usb/ps2 converter

As for changing the mouse I found an old Serial port mouse that I had laying around and powered off, plugged it in, rebooted and no dice again :(

Even with a serial mouse... hmm... i think you should try a ps2 mouse, i don't think(could be wrong) xp supports serial mice... Don't quote me on that tho.... try to get ahold of one of those converters

I should also add that the computer in question is on a network that can be accessed still, for what that would be worth.

Climbed up in the attic and found a PS2 mouse. Powered the machine down and plugged it in. On reboot I used the DEL key on the keyboard to get me into the bios and selected the PS2 mouse from AUTO to ENABLED. Saved the new settings to the CMOS and proceeded to boot into windows again.

Once again, as I got into windows, no mouse and no keyboard function.

This is really starting to suck, I am down on precious time since I am co-owner of an online business and I need to get my machine going again.

Is there anyfiles I get delete or rename on the hard drive from across the network to hopefully have windows think they werent there to begin with and like reset it somehow?

Really seeming to get desperate now.

Thanks

yea that usually has nothing to do with periphials that is just saying that you network adapter or your on board NIC is still functional.... and your drivers are working, why don't you back up your information and reinstall, that you be the best thing to do, or if you have your driver partitioned just save the files you need to save on your second partition and just reinstall windows on your system partition.... possible if you did a NTFS setup but if it is some kind of FAT format then your screwed... hmm another idea is if you have the xp disk boot from disk and fix installation.... you know how to do that

I can boot from disk, however with no mouse and keyboard function i am kind of screwed on choosing menu options.

I cant access the vital folders from across the network such as program files, documents and settings etc. I have had no luck in the past setting up shares to do this. The machine that has the problems is XP Pro and the Machine I am on now is XP Home. I read somewhere once that with this configuration the XP Home machine would not be able to access those areas not matter how the shares were set.

I will not reformat my drive without being able to recover the information off of it. As for partitions, the comuter actually has 2 hard drives. The main hard drive has Win XP Pro on it and the second drive has Win 2000 Pro on it. However when I did the initial install I did not configure it for a dual boot setup so I have never been able to boot into Win 2000 Pro since.

well that is simple:D unplug the one with xp pro on it and plug the one with 2000 pro on it to master and u can make the one with xp the slave and then just put your vital files taht way..!!!

Pull the drive you need data off of. Boot off of another drive. Back up your data. Reformat.

So I pulled out the Win XP hard disk that was giving me problems and set the jumper on the Win2000 hard disk to a single drive. I then went into the bios and set the primary disk to "AUTO" and the secondary or slave disk to "NONE".

When I rebooted the hard drive was detected but i got a message "NTLDR Is Missing" hit cntrl + alt + del to reboot....when I did I get the same error.

Well, I hit cntl alt del and went back into the bios and told the system to boot from the cd rom first. I think put my win 2000 cd in the drive and it is currently going through the setup process. I am going to attempt to do a win 2000 setup repair and see what happens. The data on this drive is not as imparative as the other.

..........patience.........

You could press f8 during bootup and choose the option (go back to last know working settings) or something like that.

I tried that, it was in my first post.

Ok, so win 2000 went to the recovery options and it asked if i wanted to do a console or an emergency recovery. at first i said console and then it asked me for my admin password and i guess i forgot it cause when i typed it in, it took me to the c:\ prompt.

I then hit cntl alt del again and proceeded to try another recovery, this time i told it to do a it the other way. Well, it scanned for hardware and etc and then it asked me if I had an emergency disk and i chose no and it looked for the install to repair. Well it found win2000 pro and proceeded to do the repair. It then said that it was finished, I guess, and the machine would reboot in 15 seconds. After the machine rebooted I got that damn error again

"NTLDR Is Missing" hit cntl alt del to reboot.

Now i am going with a fresh install of Win 2000 Pro on this drive as mentioned before there is not much imparative data on this one. I am at the screen asking me to install on selected item, create a partition on the unpartioned space, or delete the current partition.

The drive is 4Gb and it currently has a 4118 MB partition and an 8 MB partition. Dont know why, I didnt set it up like that. Anyway, will it erase everything if I install over the current installation, or will it simply write over it and everything else such as documents and 3rd party software will remain?

im guessing that it is an 8mb cache on that drive, that is what the 8mb is for, are things progressing well?

things are going terrible....cant seem to get win2000 to copy onto the drive to make it bootable, fixing to break down and put an fdisk on it.

So I have given up on trying to get Win 2000 on there, it seemed to be a repetitive cycle. It would load the setup drivers and start copying files and then it would tell me that the system needed to reboot and it would finish. After rebooting, it would go through the whole cycle again. After having done this 3 times I decided to put XP Pro on the hard drive.

I used a win 98 boot disk and got the machine to a C: prompt and then I did an FDISK and reformatted the drive. I created a new partition and set it to active. I then loaded XP in the cd rom and rebooted the machine. As the machine was POSTing i went into the BIOS and told it to boot from the CD ROM drive and then saved to the CMOS and exited. As the computer was booting back up it was trying to boot from the CDROM and failed. I had gotten this failure several times.

After several failures I then loaded the Win98 boot disk back up and again I did an FDISK, but this time I did not partition the hard driver as I was going to try a low level format install. No Dice again.

I am fixing to put my damn foot through this machine. I know the hard drive I am trying to load on is a good drive, it was working prior to all this mess.

man, that is very unfortunate, i had the same problem not to long ago when i just built my machine, your best bet is to just keep trying, it works it self out in due time

currently have win XP installing on 2ndary hard drive will be done in 15 minutes. I hope I will be able to install my main drive so that I can get my items off of it and reformat as well. Thanks for the input.

Got a successful reformat reinstall on my drive that used to have Win2000 on it. I have now loaded Win XP Pro and am currently using it right now.

Quick update...

I now have a copy of Win XP Pro on both hard disks. The hard disk that I reformatted is working fine and is running really good. I have set this hard disk as the primary and the disk I am having problems with as the primary slave.

I can now easily copy files from disk to disk and then reformat the one that is giving me problems, but I am still in the frame of mind that I would just fix the problem somehow.

After I had the new install running and stable I think switched the hard disks to make my problem disk the primary just to make sure it would still boot up. Well it did boot up, but my problem remains the same, no mouse and no keyboard and both have power.

I tried booting into safe mode and that didnt work, I tried booting to the "last known good configuration" and that didnt work, I can put the Win XP cd in the drive to attempt to "fix" the problem, but I have no way to navigate.

Surely one of you have had a similiar problem, or have some direction to point me in resolving this issue?

Ok, the latest and greatest.

I have started the computer with some Win Xp setup disks and have tried to overwrite the windows copy that is on the messed up hard drive. It went through the configuration and hardware check, deleted files and re-copied files and was to the point of needing human assistance to contiue the install. Basically I was at the point of confirming the clock time and etc. The freaking damn mouse and keyboard would not work!!

Well, I was going to use them both as a dual boot setup.....

Long story short is from the time i made the first post I finally had my computer back at 5AM this morning. I was up all night working on it. Although it was necessary for me to be up all night I could have very easliy as 9AM yesterday went to a dos prompt and did an fdisk and reloaded, however as I had stated that was not an option to me.

I did find a fix by the way. Seems that there was a problem with Logitech Mouseware drivers not loading in the registry properly and through remote administration, or if you have dual drives like i did you can access a few files and rename them, move some around and it wil trick the computer to thinking it never happened.

Of course though, I did not find this info until after I had already tried reinstalling on top of windows. From that point on the system would not even bootup I had to continue with setup.

Putting this puppy to bed now!

I, in the long run, despite the fact I didnt want to, ended up doing an fdisk on both drives for a format and reinstall on both drives. I am pissed off that there were a lot of things I lost and it never fails there is always one or two things you just go plum crazy you forgot about, but i am happy my machine is running so much faster and better now.

Im done

well man, that is a misfourtunate happening, sorry i tried to help the best i could, hope you can find that imparitive data in other locations
