Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Corporation have jointly announced that Ken Kutaragi will retire effective June 19th. Kutaragi will act as honorary chairman of SCEI and provide support to Howard Stringer as senior technology advisor.

It wasn't hard to see something like this coming, with Kaz Hirai swiping Ken's President position over Sony Computer Entertainment late last year, but now Sony has gone and made it official: Ken Kutaragi, creator of the PlayStation and all-around good looking guy, will retire from his chairman and CEO posts over Sony Computer Entertainment on June 19th.

Engadget says "relieved", WSJ says "resigned", Sony say "retired" , CNN says "Steps Down"...

Funny no one says "pushed out after being forced to the kiddy table..."

It's how they play on their words. When CEO's are cornered, they "retire" or "resign" but are always cut a huge check for a retirement bonus.

The companies should just start being honest and say "he pissed out" or "he was canned"

You got that right, you can FIRE ME ANY DAY for the kind of money these guys (not just Sony) get when they leave. The funny part is, MOST CEOs that are ousted from the company are doing bad...but they get paid like kings.

At least ol' Krazy Ken did wonders for Sony, he deserves any golden parachute he gets.

I wonder what he'll do next? I'm sure microsoft is hiring.

wouldn't that be a coup? or to see Kutaragi go to Nintendo. Personally, I think the latter is more plausible because the Japanese vendors (Nintendo and Sony) see themselves as fighting against the American "insurgents" in this war. I think it's more likely to see Kutaragi playing for the home team at Nintendo then going to MS.

Thank god, Ken's brain was filled with candy cane dreams and monkey shit.

This is old news if I recall correctly, if I remember he was kinda forced to leave or something similar, I cant recall the reasons but it has been known for a couple months or so that he was going.

Ding Dong! The Witch is dead. Which old Witch? Ken Kutaragi!
Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead.
Wake up - sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed.
Wake up, Ken Kutaragi is dead. He's gone where the bead CEOs go,
Out-out-out. Yo-ho, let's open up and sing and ring the bells out.
Ding Dong' the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it low.
Let them know
The Wicked Witch is dead!

Umm...yeah, I'm happy. :p Kutaragi outlived his usefulness years ago. Hope Sony can pull their head out of their ass now that they have removed the roadblock.

Who would want him? He's a raving nutbag!!

Oh crap, I forgot there is no edit here...and for some reason hit quote thinking it was edit.

so Sir Howard finally got some balls and made the decision

i hope this is a sign that Sony is now thinking differently on how to handle the PlayStation market. judging from this i say Kaz and Sir Howard have something different planned for the PS3 now so it will be interesting to see how it all pans out in the long run against the other consoles

as for Ken, well nice knowing ya and thank you for the PlayStation and everything you've done, but we need some new blood now to handle the PS3 since you seem to be at a disconnect from the rest of us as of late

and have fun not having to deal with these idiot fan boys anymore

Ok.. I may be an idiot, but I think the future success of the PS3 could be accomplished really simply. You know how it's $599?

Change that 5 to a 2 or 3, and it'll be a smash hit. Then, takes some of the billions of dollars your company has and invest in some game companies so that you can have some interesting titles on your platform.

Do I get 17.4 million dollars salary now?

Except the American counterparts have DEEEEEEEEEEEEP pockets. Money talks. People would turn on thier own families for enough money. :(

Americans and Europeans are like that. But Asians, particularly the Japanese, have a very strict honor code and think that that alone would keep him "honest".

I don't know....I could see Microsoft throwing enough money at him to win him over. Bill Gate's pockets are veeeeery deep.

They have a very good honor system, however, when it comes to money... honor takes the back seat. Every man has his price. I'm sure that when it comes to corporate executives such as him, you can't really make much of a statement of them having "honor" ;)
