title should be keep my crt OR go lcd. sorry for type-o

Im sick of having my bigass crt taking up so much room on my already crammed desk.... However the subject of LCD vs CRT seems to be very controversial. I dont want to lose a lot, if any quality. and i dont want ghosting or lag. So i was thinking of a name brand 19" lcd with 8ms response time or lower. But what about the contrast ratio is it all that important to have 700:1 over 500 or 600:1? and pixel pitch, im lost there. All in all should ik eep my tusty crt or go LCD, i have enough to buy a high end lcd if its a good move to make.

I say buy the LCD from a local store with a no hassle return policy and see if you like it...

It IS a very controversial debate as you said and I doubt you'll get any conclusive answer in this thread until you try it for yourself...

Personally I have a Benq T905. It's not the highest end LCD on the market these days (12ms TN panel I believe). The blacks are not pitch black, there is ever so slight backlight beed when looking at a purely black background but no whee near as bad as on my laptop display.

I havn't found that to be a problem and I absolutely love using it for desktop work compared to my old CRT. Text seems crisper, no refresh flickering etc.

Also it uses a bit less power than a CRT and is smaller.

I say go get one from a local store with a good return policy (or Dell if you had your heart set on something form them I guess).

well, i dont have a decent local place in a short driving distance, my friend has a 19" lcd and i notice that there are advantages as well as disadvantages, im just not sure which way they weigh out.

I used to be hard core to the CRT but changed my mind when a few friends got some of the latest LCD's. The tech has improved a lot recently and the response time and overall life expectancy have recieved improvements. I have a Samsung 930B and it's blacks are dark as it can get while the white inside this box is bright and clearer that what I've seen on any CRT lately. The only reason I see for getting a CRT is if you want to save your cash. This LCD has an 8ms response time and I've not seen ghosting or any artifacts on any game, the textures in FEAR were so clean and bright I could see the bumps in the enamel paint on the walls. The other benefit of an LCD is that when it says 19" you get 19". I went from a 17" NEC FE700 to this 19" Samsung and the difference in size of screen real estate is amazing yet it runs with almost no heat output (heat is a problem in our house) and we got back so much of the desk it's sitting on that it no longer feels crowded. The difference is power usage is pretty major too, the LCDs are very low wattage, mine is only 35 watts max. If I had to do it again I'd still get the LCD.
The reason for getting one from a nearby store is if there are dead or stuck pixels you can just exchange it but if you stick with the good brands, Samsung, Viewsonic, NEC, Westinghouse, it's very rare to get any pixel defects. I got 2 LG's that I took back because of bad pixels, then decided to spend the extra $60- and go with the recommended quality of this Samsung. Hope this helps you.

well thanks for the input BriSleep. ill followthat advice, and get a 19" samsung

Eh, I absolutely hate the Samsung 930B. The color is just awful and the the ghosting is noticable. Definitely a purchase I regret, I gave it to my parents who needed it.

What CRT do you have now? It may not be worth upgrading if you have a nice aperture grille monitor.

Just be sure you buy it from somewhere that allows returns / refunds ..you may be disapointed falling into the LCD hype, I sure was.

go lcd, i love my dell 17 in ultrasharp. i mean i guess its more of personal preference go look at your local compusa or bestbuy at the lcds and see what you like best.

An older model LCD may not look as good as the ones out now but they have made some good changes in the start of 2005 models, especially in response times. Everyone can cite a bad experience here and there but if you read these posts for a few hours you'll see the Samsung 930B is highly regarded as one of the best out there.
