I just got the 2004 Intel Retail Edge. It is a 3.4GHz CPU, some Intel board, and XP Pro. What do you think I should do with it?

1) Sell my current IC7-G & 2.8C, keep the 3.4E and get a DFI 875P-T (875 chipset)

2) Same as 1, but get a 915 board that has DDR2, PCI-E, etc.

3) Sell the bundle, wait for an NF4 board and then get an A64 90mm.

I would like to get watercooling sometime in the next few months and I'm not a hard core gamer, so the A64 advantage in gaming is not that big a deal to me.
 
If cost isn't an issue, I would go with option 2. Some people may say go wait for the NF4 board and A64, but the only argument for that option is compatibility with 64-bit OSes and programs that will come out. If that isn't an issue, than definately option 2. :)
 
Unless you are into gaming but since you said your not then option 2 is for you.

Did i just make that rhyme??? :)
 
The reason I don't really want to go with option 2 is because DDR2 ram is expensive and slow compared to DDR1.
 
what about selling the xp pro, and board that came with the intel package, and keeping the cpu and using it on your current ic7g. take the money you made from selling the board and xp to buy some watercooling.
 
Sell the Intel board, your IC7-G and your 2.8C. Do you have a reason to keep your 1GB of PC3200? If not then sell it as well. You'll also have to sell your AGP video card if you plan to get a PCI-E board.

Then buy yourself a top overclocking 915p or 925X chipset board and 1GB of DDR2 and a PCI-E 6600GT and your set to install the 3.4E in it.

And i would keep the copy of XP Pro.
 
Well, that proc is an LGA 775 socket no way in Hell it'll work with a socket 478 board. I'd say Option 2 is your first option as #1 is impossible, but why buy an i915 mainboard? you already got one in the bundle. So really you got option 2 or option 3. I'd say Option 3 because Prescott just sucks, too hot, and can't touch an AMD 64.

I love AMD....but unlessyou're getting a dual AMD set-up be ready to MISS your hypertheading advantage. The AMD device will encode faster for sure, but you won't be able to do fuck with it as it does.

..if that's your thing.
 
If i'm not mistaken doesn't the Intel 915PBL support DDR2 and PCI-E? I just checked their website and it does.

Even though the 90nm Prescott cores are hotter then the Northwoods that doesn't mean they are TOO hot and a P4 is faster then an A64 in several different areas, especially multitasking. It smokes an A64 in multitasking. Its also faster for encodeing and productivity software. You can also get a mad overclock on a Prescott chip. They will run 4Ghz+ on aircooling.

There is a 3.4E socket 478 processor and a 550 3.4Ghz LGA775 processor so they come in both sockets.

For the record, my main rig that I'm typing on right now has a 3.0Ghz Pentium 4, so don't pull out the AMD f**boi flamethrower yet. Also, the intel retail edge kit comes with the P4 550 (which is LGA 775)

Well my rig right now has Athlon 64 3500+ 90nm in it so :p.

So the Intel bundle does come with the 550 LGA775? If thats true then he has no choice but to sell his motherboard and buy a new one unless he plans to use the one Intel sent him. I was thinking it was the socket 478 version because of him saying he could use his current Abit IC7-G.
 
The 3.4 is a socket 775, I didn't say anything about putting it in my IC7-G.

The DFI 875P-T uses the 875 chipet, but accepts socket 775 chips, so I would not have to waste money on DDR2 which is at least $100 more then the DDR1 I have now and provides no permformance gain that I can see.

I'm definitely selling the Intel board and XP Pro, I just don't know if I'm keeping the CPU or not.

My bad, i dont know why i thought you said you were going to use your IC7-G. :confused:

Before you decided whether or not you were going to keep the CPU i would overclock it and see what it can do. If it doesn't overclock well then i would go ahead and sell it. If you can hit over 3.8Ghz then i would keep it unless you were wanting an Athlon 64 setup instead.

Thing is I've got a 540 (3.2GHz) laying around from my SB81P adventure that I've been meaning to sell off. I was thinking of keeping it since it's used and selling the 550 new since I would get more money then if I opened it.

On the other hand, if I goto the trouble of water cooling, I want 4GHz minimum, I might need to try a couple of chips. That DFI board looks really nice and I noticed it has VDIMM upto 3.2v stock which should be enough to get a nice OC on my BH-5.

Right now I'm leaning towards option one, because I wouldn't have to buy a new video card or RAM. DDR2 is so expensive and the timings suck hard, it will probably be a while before there is any benefit over DDR1. And PCI-E is cool for SLI, but I don't see myself ever needing 2 video cards and AGP can take me all the way to a 6800 Ultra or X850 XT, which will be plenty far enough.

Really the only question now is if I should just wait and get a NF4 plus A64 90mm. I probably would, but I don't want to give up Hyper Threading.
