keep external hard drive on?

how many of you with external hard drives keep them on all the time? i was just curious to see if people ran their external drives as long as they keep their computers on. I.E WD MYBOOKs
 
I turn mine off because I use it as a backup HD. I don't want to have both my internal HD and external HD fried because of a power surge and be left with no backups.
 
I built my own external, and the enclosure houses 2 drives and has a fan to keep things nice and cool. I still turn the external off when I turn the system off. The external has it's own power button, and it sits atop my case, so why not turn it off?
