I have a Seagate Backup Plus 5TB and find it kind of annoying how it has to spin up if it's left idling for too long. Is there any way to keep the drive spinning?
 
You can try and command the drive to not sleep, but most externals have circuitry to auto-sleep them.

In that case you need a program that will write files every so often automatically so the drive doesn't spin down.
 
Seagate's Advanced Power Management can have aggressive settings on head parking. You may be able to use HDParm to disable head parking each time you boot up, but as staticlag says, the external drive controller might get in the way of doing even that.
 
Most of these enclosures don't sport a fan. I wouldn't run such a drive continuously as it will overheat.
