Kaveri speculation thread.

I think Phenom 2 owners were pretty happy with their purchase since they are still somewhat relevant.

Phenom I was also a big disappointment. Although Phenom II fixed most of the problems a year or so later. I can not remember any other backtracking.

Yeah, I forgot about the first K10 chips. Phenom had some issues, like that infamous cold bug, among other things like average performance with low clocks that was fixed with PII. I'd reckon Bulldozer -> Piledriver to be akin to Phenom -> Phenom II.

Regardless, people need to stop talking about AMD "catching up" to Intel's "speed" in terms of raw CPU power. Realistically, we wouldn't see AMD catch up to Intel's single-threaded performance for quite some time. But it's not really a big deal because the future won't be geared towards single-threaded apps anyway. The future is about massive parallelism. It's not like modern AMD CPU's are inadequate with their performance anyway, so not sure why Intel blowhards always bring it up.

Steamroller's revisions will increase the ST performance somewhat, but people shouldn't expect miracles. We'd probably see something along the lines of Nehalem maybe, best case scenario would put it up to Sandy speeds, but I doubt it. It's not like Intel is making huge strides in their performance boosts anyway -- they've been focusing on using less power and hitting lower TDP targets for mobile devices moreso than anything. That's why Haswell was seen as a disappointment on the desktop sector. Anyone who already had a Sandy or Ivy chip had no real reason to upgrade.

Even so, I think AMD was wise to declare that they weren't chasing after the speed wars anymore...because really, it's pointless, and only "enthusiasts" who worship benchmarks really care about that anyway.
 
X6 1055T costed as much as i5 750 and lost in majority of real world tests
X6 1090T costed as much as i7 920 and could barely match it in few selected benchmarks
 
To bring this argue-fest back on topic. I'm definitely looking forward to Kaveri. Ideally, they'd be the cornerstone to some great LAN party PC's. I can imaging putting together a LAN party system with a Kaveri APU + ITX mobo + 4GB of RAM. Would be sweet.

That would be sweet..I'd hate to throw my A10-6800K into a small ITX system and think of the heat/fan noise that puppy would give off!

Wait, really? How hot do these things get? I was thinking A10 (or A8) + BitFenix Prodigy.
 
They don't if you're not overclocking them. You can also cut the TDP drastically with a slight reduction in core clock and honking undervolt.
 
Yeah, just about all of the APU's can undervolt pretty well. The APU's are great for LAN party rigs and small form factors. Not really any need to OC the CPU portions anyway unless you're doing something like PS2 emulation.

Sorry but yes they run hot, even at stock. I would not use the stock heatsink/fan in a mini itx case. Unless you actually own one you have no idea. I'm using a TT closed loop dual fan water setup, which runs the coolest and even tried a CM 212+. Both heat up really fast under load. Keep in mind though this thing runs normally at 4.1-4.2GHz under load vs.the slower 5800K.

PS; If you have to reduce core clock and undervolt to keep it cool then why in the hell buy in in the first place? Better off buying the 65w version or a slower APU.

Chill out. I own the 6800K...do you? What does playing with APU's for years have to do with it? You do realize I'm only talking about the 6800K under heavy load, not the other versions.

My A10-5800k was a scorcher at a mere 4.0ghz. It also liked a ton of voltage too. I also had an A8-5600k that barely hit 50c at 4.1ghz with 1.36v stable. AMD uses TIM between the die and IHS on the APUs. Probably a contact issue just like the Intel cpus.


It all depends on the mobo with the heat issue Centauri is talking about. I had an MSI board that applied 1.47v stock to my A10, then a Biostar at 1.425v, then an Asrock with 1.35v. The Asrock ran the coolest of course :)

These CPUs can seriously under volt at their stock speeds. I could run my A8-5600k at 1.25v stock speeds.

If your talking about the fx chips. They do run cool stock for sure. That's with APM on and c6. Turn off APM and over clock and it gets hot fast. My chip barely turn the fans on my cooler during gaming stock clocks.

It would be great for SFF users which is becoming an ever more relevant chunk of AMD's market as they concentrate on APU's.

I love to see an FM2+ mITX board with a Dock Port enabled displayport adapter on the back panel.

Dear God. As much as I like AMD, and want them to succeed, the last thing they need to do is spend time and money trying to push forward a Thunderbolt competitor...USB 3.1 will be able to do pretty much everything TB can now, without having to pay through the nose for Intel's licensing..

AMD needs to stick to what it knows best, CPUs, GPUs, and their return to the SoC space..If only they hadn't sold of their mobile division to Qualcomm back in the day...

You do know that the solution is freely implemented (no licensing costs)and hardware costs are below $2 or so to implement.

USB 3.1 is nice but it costs more money more then likely.

AMD could stick to CPU/GPU but where do we get mainboards from, this is another important thing you forget.

If Qualcomm is anything to go by is that if AMD had a level playing field and not stuck with Intel it would have done great.
 
One thing I hate about the "platform only transfer solution" is, that it really hurt consumers. Lets say you have intel t-bolt, your friend has AMD dockport... If you want to transfer data, you will still go for USB drives :).

Same at work, if my PC at home has dockport and work computer have either USB or t-bolts, why the hell I'd ever buy device that can't access work machines.

And if motherboards makers will want to have all the standards included, then cost of the mono will surge. Speaking not, that both Intel and Amd might not agree to allow competition's solution working with their chipset.

Generally everyone will be such fed up with that nuisance, that people will stay with USB devices, and all the other systems will die like HD-DVD :)

After reading this I downvolted my A8K to 1.3. I'd like to OC the gpu, but when I do it stays at the OC'ed speed even at idle. I'm currently running the ram OCed from 1600 to 1866 but haven't pushed further. I'm not sure dropping cash on 2400 for a frame or two would be worth it. The gpu should have no problem running at at least 800.
