can it be done? I cant find anything in the bios like "halt on: none" or "primary display adapter: serial/none"

is there a special bios that I can get for it? or is it just windows xp that doesnt like running headless?

A little of both, actually.

See if you can find a cheap, functional vcard and just leave it in there. Pretty much any compatible card will do since you're not going to be looking at its product anyway, right?
