What is the consensus of the [H] community on the K-Lite codec pack? I am currently using this, in conjunction with Media Player Classic as my primary video-watching method on Vista. I haven't seen it talked about here before (it may have been, but I just haven't seen it) so I was wondering if others here use it?

I use VLC on OS X for my videos, and I was considering just using VLC on Vista as well, but I do prefer the GUI for MPC.

So...K-Lite, thumbs up or down?
 
I don't know that there is a consensus. I have used k-lite full install with good success. Others don't like it at all. If nobody else chimes in do a search on the forum and you will find many many discussions about codec paks.
 
I used to use it but I find using FFDShow tryouts is more than enough.
 
I tend to steer clear of codec packs, but because they can potentially break things, just because I don't always know everything that's going in, even with a custom install.

I prefer to use VLC, with the built in codecs I don't see a use for using a pack myself.
 
I used to use that codec pack, but I've grown to love VLC.

I use it on both of my platforms Vista/OS X
 
I used to use K-Lite Codec Pack, but I don't really like it anymore. Just way too much stuff.

I now use Combined Community Codec Pack, which I find far superior. Easier settings, still plays everything. They just updated it on 9/21.

For some reason, I've never liked the VLC interface, so I can't really stand to use it. I really like the MPC interface, so that's why I use CCCP.
 
i always use K-Lite Codec Pack with WMC, never had problem, if i do run into a problem that means you just need to downloaded the latest release for new codecs.
 
I've been using K-Lite for a long time, never any problems. I don't have it install MPC though, I use WMP11 for playback.
 
I think for a noob, it's too much. It installs much more than what's actually needed. I personally love CCCP.
 
I used to use K Lite, but like people mentioned it breaks some things.

I use CCCP now and I find it far better.

All come's down to personal preference. I've never ever seen K-lite break anything as people keep mentioning, and this is after putting it on literally hundreds of machines that I keep track of.

Agreed. People always talk about how bad it is to use codec packs but quite frankly, it never caused a problem on my end and I always had the proper codecs even when I needed to do some encoding of my own.

With that said, I do think ffdshow packages are generally all people need. I just don't think codec packs are as bad as people keep saying they are
 
I've been using the K-Lite Mega pack with the 64-bit codecs pack and Quick Time Alternative for a long time. It's never broken anything for me.
 
Interesting. Well, I haven't had K-Lite break anything on me (yet), so I think I'm going to continue using it...I guess the one complaint I have is that it is a very bulky pack, even with a custom install trying to trim down on what is put on my system.
 
I use k-lite because it comes with MPC and every codec i do and do not need. might be cutting a loaf of bread with a chainsaw, but i dont mind.
 
How does VLC play all those formats without installing any codecs?

I have used the K-Lite Standard build for years with no problems, but as I am building a new machine, I could/would go VLC if it's cleaner...

I also find CCCP is far better. Seems clear and less bloat than KLITE and allows playing everything I've run across from the obvious divx and mpeg4 variants, flv's, and the weird mkv packages that gave me a headache once upon a time.
 
K-Lite just installs too many codecs at once for my taste, is hard to uninstall (leaves trash behind) and is a pain if you do any kind of serious video encoding.

CCCP is nice and light, easy to tweak to not touch anything you don't want it to and painless to uninstall and update.
 
Thats right K-Lite codec are lot of stuff to see and also play most of the contents. But still
VLC is a nice choice for me.
 
I been using K-Lite mega codec and Media Player Classic for the past two years and no problems. I just like the fact that I don't have to hunt down codecs. Click and play
 
FFDShow + MPC = plays 98% of the content you'll find online, add QuickTime Alternative for QuickTime stuff and another 1%, then add RealAlternative if you must and get the other 1%...

Never had any reason to ever use anything else once I found that combo of two things (with QTAlternative as needed). Real files never touch my hardware, ever.
 
K-Lite screwed up my system and made Windows Explorer crash when ever I opened it. It also managed to crash windows defender at startup. I uninstalled it and the problems went away.
 
I have used klite for years and never had any problem.

I use GOM player for most videos but if they actually are in some weird format that is not DIVX and XVID, I use WMP since it actually uses the codecs that klite installed.
 
Zoom Player + CCCP + CoreAVC.

That's what I use, and it works for me.
 
Except that CoreAVC isn't free.

Besides, CCCP can already play .mkv files fine (most of them). Sure, you get a performance boost from CoreAVC, but the price isn't that attractive to most people.
 
I <3 VLC

I use to spend a lot of time with codecs but not anymore. Yes I wish Media center worked with it but I rather have a program that will play it then trying to find the codec for it.
 
i've been using k-lite for years, no problems for me. works great for my cell phone videos.
