Justifying your tft

Am considering switching from 21" sony crt to tft but somehow I can't help but believe people have to justify their purchase as really being great when in fact it is just ok. In other words, is it really worth it as my crt works great but i'm looking for something better still. Am not sure if this is the way to go as I can't throw away money. Am I right in what I've said?
 
I bought one because I needed to buy a new monitor, however, if I had a good CRT at the time, I would not have purchased one.
 
I bought one because I wanted somewhere to write on my desk. My old CRT didn't allow me enough room.
 
I got one because I was farking sick of a 40 pound ugly ass beige thing sitting in front of my new office desk with a fish bowled curved screen. No more CRT's for me.
 
I got one because of space reasons at college and the ease of transport (going home for the long breaks we get). Now I might get another one because my current one is pretty outdated and small (15" IBM LCD, 25ms response time)

If you find yourself lugging it around very much at all, I would highly recommend an LCD. They are huge space savers too (obviously). If you have a lot of space and a good CRT which you don't move around much, I suppose there isn't much of a reason to buy a nice LCD.
 
I got one because for my eyes, it is better than any CRT I have ever used in every way except blacks, which are still very well above what is visually pleasing.
 
I got one for my eyes as well.
I just set it up this morning in fact. I love this thing already.

14 months of holding up a 40+ kilo CRT was to much for my old desk, it bowed too much and started to de-laminate, so I got a throw-out desk from work and a 23" TFT....
 
I love my eyes :D Granted my 19" Viewsonic PF790 ain't that bad, but it's seen its days.

Work more than 10-12hrs/day and during my free time, still in front of the monitor playing games or browsing.
 
feh, I wen't from a 21" Viewsonic P810 to a Samsung 913T 8ms TFT LCD monitor.

Sure, the Samsung LCD was brighter and a hair sharper, but it BLURS fine detail when in fast motion (especially noticeable in GuildWars w/ fine detail, also noticeable in BF2 in fine detail).

LCD's have a bit more to go, even the new ViewSonic 4ms LCD still has some blurring when compared to a CRT.

I went back to my old ViewSonic CRT, and have a IBM P275 being shipped to me from Azatek. I want the brightness of an LCD with the detail of a CRT, I'm hoping this IBM delivers.

If you can deal with detail blurring in fast motion, go w/ LCD. Otherwise, stick to CRT - although it's getting quite difficult to find a decent Aperture Grill CRT these days.

Best test for blurring on an LCD is to open a bunch of text in Notepad, and them move the notepad window around or scroll the window really fast - you'll see the letters blur. If they don't blur, then that's a good LCD.
 
Space reasons
5 yr old CRT was going bad (i.e. blurry text on some parts of the screen, distortion on sides, some very slight wavy lines near the damper (?) wires)
But I spend $305 ($255 AR) so I it was a good deal for me.
 
This Dell 2405 is my second LCD. After using these for 2 years there is no way I could go back to my 19" CRT. I was very happy with it but the easiness on the eyes, the sharpness, the drop in heat and radiation factors, plus the power savings are making those old tubes obsolete. And gaming is great!
 
When I got my first LCD, it was all about space. I lived in the barracks and all I had was a 3'x2'x7' space to store all my personal possessions, including my computer.

CRT's also hurt my eyes after a couple hours, whereas LCDs have no effect. Then there is the weight concern. I move my computer a lot(LANs), having a 21" crt for lans is out of the question.
 
If my CRT didn't go bad I probably wouldn't have considered LCD yet, but even now I'm still thinking about getting an used 22" SONY, they go pretty cheap now.
 
I had a mediocre 19" Samsung CRT. The picture was sharp but the colors were a bit washed out. The monitor itself was huge and afforded no desktop space. I switched to the Hyundai L90D+ June. Suffice it to say I will never get a CRT again. In fact, I purchased a 2005fpw 6 weeks later and use that for gaming and my L90D+ for everything else.
 
Weight, my new glass desk only supports 50lbs max on the top, My CRT 19" was 69lbs, and i had two of them. My 2405FPW is what? 22lbs?

Space. Im tired of taking up so much space on my desk. Sure the 2405fpw is wider but i can push it back. And put stuff around/under it without much hassle.


Heat. The damn thing was a space heater. My room is alot cooler now that I've removed it. On top of that energy bill of 2 monitors on allt he time was a concern. It's just not cost efficiant
 
I had a ViewSonic 21" before.
It was a nice sceen, but i spend a good 12 hours+ a day.
Looking into a computer monitor between work and home.

I figure if im gonna stare at something that long each day, might as well make it as appealing as possible. Not to mention not frying my eyes over the years.

I got the Dell 2405, i cant imagine ever wanting a larger monitor , its perfect in fact if anything its almost too big. I love widesceen, its so nice when multitaking.

I could never go back to a CRT and Non-wide screen ever again.
Though my work monitor is non wide screen....might have to do something about that.

But it is a flat screen, and i did notice it was alot easier on the eyes when i got it earlier this year.

Not to mention all the room i got back on my desk, a 21" crt is no small item.
Its about the same width as my 21" but since its so much thinner. i gained about 6 " of space back on my desk.
Not to mention it uses a fraction of the electricity of my crt.

Plus it looks cool :)
 
I switched from a 21" Trinitron to a Dell 2001fp. The lcd is awesome for text/web/code/work use. Clear text (DVI and VGA), 1600x1200 desktop, 4 inputs (ok, i only use 2), light, and far less glare than the Trinitron. When i play games, i wish the Trinitron hadn't died on me. The 2001fp is ok, and i can play just about anything, but at anything other than 800x600 (which is blocky on a 20" screen) or 1600x1200 (which my 9800pro has a hard time with), it's a bit fuzzy. The interpolation is good, but it's not a CRT.

If i had to do it again, i'd look for a nice CRT, and maybe a cheap 17" LCD (or two) to do work on. ;]

Over the last couple years I kept hearing all this hype on LCD and how they "own" CRT blah blah so I finaly broke down and bought one , I ran it next to my Sony 21" G520P CRT for a few weeks (clone mode) and although the LCD had nice Text output I never had a problem reading text @ 1600x1200 on my CRT either, to make a long story short, a good CRT is still the king of displays, I ended up getting a refund on the LCD (Dell 2001FP).

As I see it the only advantages LCDs have are weight,power consumption,heat and the fact they look more attractive / modern , but none of this has anything to do with Image quality :)

CRT Advantages: Pure black levels,Superior Contrast ratios (Average CRT is well above 1000:1) , Refrence standard color accuracy,smooth infinite grayscale ,looks great at any viewing angle,use any resolution without worring about scaling/Image degration,no input lag(I noticed a slight delay/lag vs. whatever the crt was showing) , and last but certainly not least,no motion blur worries with 1ms response times.

Oh yeah.

1) easier on my eyes (what can I say, I am 35 and mild astigmatism)
2) fast enough for my games (<125fps)
3) LOTS more desk space
4) LOTS lighter when going to LAN's than a 21" CRT
5) less heat in my bedroom than the huge CRT
6) it's plain trick

The ONLY disadvantage I have found is that true black is not quite as black as the CRT. No big deal, I only surf and play games on it. It's actually better than I expected and I am not 100% picky....it's all good.

i did the exact same thing...
To me, CRTs are still a novelty. I use a lcd here at work (2001fp) at work and I'm still happy coming home to my 21" trinitron. :)

I assume you mean "LCD's are still a novelty"?

As for me, I love my new LCD. I can't wait till I get another.

The last item is only true for certain people with high sensitivity for flickering light, and those with poorly calibrated CRTs.

Yes, I'm bothered by the size and weight of the two 17" CRTs I'm looking at right now, and whenever I've to reach behind them I can feel the warm air above them which reminds me that it's not the most energy efficient display one can imagine.

But despite those flaws, CRTs are still the #1 option if you want the most value for your money. An LCD display which can compare with a certain CRT will usually be around twice as expensive and still doesn't fully match the latter in features.

And aside from that, I've noticed that I can't stand looking at LCDs for extended periods of time. Perhaps it's due to the backlight and LED-based backlights will not give me those problems, but I'll be damned if I'm going to spend my money on a display which as a whole is inferior to cheaper options.
