Justifying a PS3 purchase.

What is wrong with asking for game advice, not everyone knows every title out for a ps3, i didnt, i grabbed games based off of recommendations from people, i prefer it that way as you get to hear people who have actually played the games and no just hype from online sites paid to give great reviews.

Buying a game based off peoples recommendations and reviewers is the same thing lol.. they're both people. Fanboys or Bias or Want to keep there job reviewers. You contradicted yourself in your own paragraph. The best reviewer is yourself. I Never buy a game off what others say.

Ok then how do you buy a game then? Do you just buy every game that comes out to see if you find some gems? Because you are either buying it based off some crap the publisher said, or buying a game based off some internet preview which is just there to drum up hype. Neither of those sources is really kosher for reliable information. Do you whip out a big fact sheet and use that before buying games?

Not everyone has $60 to drop on every release that interests them. "Professional" reviews are very often rather dry and its often hard to believe an ad for Game XYZ is honest when their entire website hosting is covered in advertisements for the games. Plus a lot of sites like IGN just stamp high scores on pretty much everything that you would expect them to stamp high scores on.

Personally I much prefer the feedback and recommendations of similarly minded who just dropped $60 when making game buying decisions. I find forums like this great for recommendations, I know who has an opinion that I trust and who is just a fanboy and I take that into account.

I should of been more clear, i dont go by any one review, i scour the net looking for reviews, many people said go buy Demon Souls it is awsome for multiplayer, but looking around and seeing for myself and other said, i didnt buy it. I find people are less likely to blow complete BS up your butt like more reviews sites who get extras if they give X companies games a 10/10 vs someone who bought the game and didnt like it, or maybe did, this is why most of us come to sits like [H] for user feedback, real experience with products, not some website that hyped it up cause they will then get say more free vid cards samples in the future if they gives the latest card a high score!

I meant what I said. Which is a VGA cable. Since he has an older console with no HDMI port, VGA is the only other option for 1080p on the 360.

My bad i thought older consoles still had the adapter to composite, i had one for my 360 went from the 360 jack to a composite cable which gave me 1080 on my tv.

You're making the same mistake again. What you're referring to are COMPONENT cables. These cables have 5 wires (red, green, and blue for video; white and red for audio). COMPOSITE cables have 3 wires (yellow for video, white and red for audio). Please try to learn the difference to avoid confusion with people whom may not know what you're speaking of.

And yes, you are correct. 360s can output games at 1080p via component but only if the TV it is being used on supports it. The OP mentioned his TV doesn't support that feature so component isn't a viable option; which is why I suggested that maybe he should get a VGA cable. Also keep in mind that while games can be displayed at 1080p via component, DVDs will be played at 480p and will not upscale unless the system is connected through VGA or HDMI.

Yes my bad, dont know why i was thinking composite...LOL component, you got me, i apologies for my completly massive brain fart.. :)

I'm somewhat the same way.. My friend at work got a PS3 for X-Mas along with 2 or 3 games, but I already have an HDMI XBox 360 and just can't seem to find the perks to justify it's purchase.

Media Center? Pfft I couldn't care less.. I'll either stream + transcode it from my PC or build an HTPC with some scrap parts I have (maybe $100 out of pocket) or just buy a WD TV Live.

HDD? Once again, don't really care. The only thing I use my HDD for on the 360 is to install games for playing, but I only keep a handful of good ones installed anyways.

Blu-Ray? Don't care.. All my media is on DVD anyways and I'm no videophile so upconverting works dandily for me! Don't want to have to re-buy everything on Bluray anyways, and they can be expensive too.

Wireless? Don't care.. I got a free DD-WRT compatible router that sits behind my entertainment stand and I just use Client Bridged mode.. These can also be found for $25-$30 refurbished pretty much daily, so you don't have to drop the $80 or $100 on the wireless adapter..

Free Online Play? Couldn't care less.. XBox Live is SO worth it, and it's super cheap. I just got 2 x 12 month cards for about $24 a piece (15% Bing CB + 10% family employee discount at walmart + no tax) so it was under $50 for 2 years of XBox live. That's about $2 a month.. I'm not THAT frugal...

Thus, the only remaining thing is the most important.. the games. Uncharted semi-interests me as does God of War 3 and GT5, but nothing else seems to get my blood pumping. MSG4 wasn't that great, at least in my opinion.. Infamous and Killzone don't really interest me either.

Unfortunately I just can't justify it.. even if it was $200 I wouldn't.. Maybe if and when it hits the $150 or $175 point, but until then I just can't pull the trigger.

.........and that's why your opinions suck.

LOL.. We all know what opinions are like right? (Hint: everyone has one and they all stink)

I lost interest in MGS after the second one.. They make the story WAY to far fetched and complicated, and it seemed like there was way too many cinematics in the 4th one.

Hasn't there been rumors of MGS moving platforms too? I imagine they may break off eventually like some of the other PS3 exclusives have..

Either way, my opinion is that if I can't find at least 5+ good games for a console I wont really consider it, especially with today's economy and with these next gen consoles inflated prices. Gone are the days of $100 consoles like Genesis or SNES.

Lastly, if you are asking for help justifying a purchase, do you really need/want it in the first place?

My PS3 collects dust.

They are certainly dust magnets, any tips on how you keep yours clean and sparkly? :D

Lastly, if you are asking for help justifying a purchase, do you really need/want it in the first place?

This.

Need to justify it then don't bother I'd say. You either will use the features or you won't....weigh up the pros and cons and make an informed decision to suit your needs.
