the 7800 gt are out now, and there the same hardware, but the bio has changed , couldn't you just flash the bios on the chip with the GTX bios and that would unlock the 4 pipes, I very high doubt they changed the hardware just to lower 4 pipes,
 
I think its possible they could physically cut the 4 unused pipes to prevent that from happening. dont know if they actually have or not though ;)
