Hey I just started folding and was wonder if you install the F@H graphical client does it install it as a service thats starts when you boot up? Right now i'm folding on an a64 3500+ and hope to be getting my 3.4ghz p4 up and running again and i'll fold on that as well. Maybe even my 1.6 p4 if I can find a HD for it.

Welcome to the Horde.

Only the console client can start up as a service. The graphical client will work once you have logged into XP. The console does not require you to be logged on.

Furthermore, you do not need a hard drive to be folding. There are plenty of Linux LiveCDs which you can boot off the RAM. I am posting from Damn Small Linux, which is a LiveCD or you can try unhappy_mage's fold server.

good luck and do some borging.

influx, yes as mag mentioned, the console will start as a service. If you've already configured it and don't have it running, you will need to re-run the console executeable (ex. FAH502-Console.exe) with the -configonly command and re-configure things as prompted. One of the first options you will be prompted with is if you would like it to run as a service. F@H will make all the necessary registry edits in order to get it set up. Further information on the various flags can be found here and information on the various live CD's can be found here. Welcome to the [H]orde!

Keep on Folding!!

Welcome to the team! We'll be looking for an "influx" of work units!

Welcome aboard and please get the 1.4 going. post in the swap thread for parts. Old small hard drives are easy to come by.

How long does it take to normally complete a WU on a a64 3500+ with 1GB of ram?

My 3.4Ghz computer has 2GB of ram, does that much ram help in any way?

It helps to have over 512MB. 1GB is good for a system that you are using for real work and folding (I wouldn't expect any performance increase over 1GB). A WU on a 3500+ running 24/7 should take anywhere from 18-48 hours.

RAM only helps in determining which WUs you'll get.... if you have more than 256MB, you "can" get the big packet WUs......

Proteins vary in completion times... your A64 should blow through most of them pretty quickly.... Those that actually have similar processors will probably chime in with some averages....

Keep on Folding!!

On your 3.2, if it has HT, with the 2 GB you could comfortable run two sessions of F@H with both running some big WU's and probably not have to deal with sluggishness.

Thanks for all the quick replys. I'll try and get my 1.6 p4 up and running again with one of those live cd's later today.

awesome, get that P4 going for sure!

welcome and a warning, this stuff gets addicting
