Got my new 4000+ all installed with XP Pro (finally.. only took like 4 hours and 6-ish BSODs), and figured, let's put that CPU to work right now!

Folding on my old 2.8Ghz P4 as well.. folding name is Nate_Finch (creative, I know).

Very happy to be doing my small part in all this.

FOR THE [H]ORDE!

Hey, welcome to the [H]orde Nate! Looks like you've got some powerful hardware there you're putting to work for us...that's legit. Make sure you add your boxen to the "D" thread, and once again, welcome aboard! :D

Edit: Also, if you haven't already, since it seems like you have an abundance of RAM (at least on your new AMD64 box, turn on large work units, they'll reap you (and us as a team) far more points.

FULL FOLD AHEAD!!

Nice additions Nate. Like Maniacmous said, there is the "D to..." thread you can add those into, also, once you've gotten your first units in, don't forget to get your [H]'s! Welcome to the team!

I notice you said you had BSOD's while installing Windows. I would suggest you run Prime95 and memtest to make sure your rig is stable before you start folding with it. It won't do the project any good if the CPU isn't stable and sending back WUs with mistakes.

Thanks for joining and helping us out. With the power you have, it shouldn't take too long to rise in the ranks.

Welcome aboard, let's put those great computers to use for sure. If you have any issues with that new AMD don't hesitate to ask, lot's of good people here for advice.

Fold on

Fold Long... Fold Hard... but whatever you do.. dont STOP folding ;)

Welcome! Feel free to let the addiction take hold!

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

Thanks guys. :)

I'm pretty sure I know what caused the BSODs during install. I got IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, which when googled turned up several people mentioning that logitech mouse drivers loaded during install cause BSODs... I unplugged the mouse and that fixed that problem, however I foolishly tried to "Repair" my installation. It never worked right until I reformatted and started from scratch. Installed like a breeze afterward though.

I'll run prime95 and memtest when I get home tonight... but I think it was a software issue, not a hardware one.

I did, indeed, turn on large work units... is 1 gig of RAM enough for that? That's what my p4 box is running.

-Nate

1 gig of RAM should be just fine for big packets, I run them with 512MB of RAM on my laptop, however, I rarely use said laptop. Still, it works when I need it to just fine, so you should be more than alright with a full gig.

I shoulda started with small work units so I can get my name on the folding board sooner... After like 7 hours (when I got up this morning) I was at 40k / 250k on the 4000 and 30k / 250k on the P4. At this rate it'll be midday tomorrow when they finish :p

-Nate

Actually depending on the WU... they all take about that much time.. sometimes the smaller point ones take longer then some of the large ones even, no worries you will be there soon enough

Anyone know what the average difference in power draw is between an idle CPU and a 100% active CPU? Just wondering how much electricity I'm burning.

There is a thread around here that has that info, but if your pc is always on the added power draw from idle to full load is not much more.
Ill try to find that thread.

Still looking for that but check this.

Re your power consumption question. I just got my new toy, the Kill-A-Watt. Besides creating a whole new problem arguing with my power company I have found some interesting results.

This machine, Winnie 3200 @ 2.5 gig, gig 0 Ram, two hard drives, one optical drive, 2 120mm fans, 1 92mm fan. 1 nForce GT 6600 running on an Antec 550 PSU uses .15 KWH at full load. That reading was taken over a 48 hour period.

.15 KWH X 24 hours=3.6 KWH per day. My rate I’m told is $00.10 per KWH. That works out to about $10.80 for this machine per month based on 720 hours.

Hope that helps a bit.

Welcome to the [H]orde.

It can work out at about 20% to 50% more depending on your CPU.
Heres a page which show the idle & full load power useage of some top line systems.

Luck........... :D

Nice, thanks. That's about what I expected, looks like 30-50% more with CPU under load, depending on if you have cool and quiet running (don't think I do).

I'm going to have to start overclocking... something to read up on, since I haven't overclocked anything in ages, and my first rudimentary attempts last night required a CMOS reset

I figured, 10% increase in FSB, 9/10 memory divider, should be no problem for a Rev E chip, right? Evidently not so much. I know, there's a lot more to it than that... I was just hoping for some quick and easy extra cycles. Guess I'll have to do it the hard way.

I've seen people mention stopping a WU in the middle and restarting... that'll work ok and not lose data? I ask 'cause if I'm going to overclock, I'll need to reboot several times.

If you're going to be rebooting numerous times, I would recommend stopping F@H for the duration of your testing. WU's can be lost by the client not shutting down cleanly, or by a bad OC. For the good of the science, get your rig stable first, Prime95, and once it gives the all clear for your OC, then start running F@H again.

Yeah, I figured I'd set the service to manual during the OC time, get it stable, then go on. Just wanted to make sure I don't waste the 17-ish hours I'll have on this WU by the time I get home. Looks like that'll be ok as long as I shut it down normally. Thanks :)

-Nate

I hate to beat a broken drum, but I'm somewhat new to folding, but have gained experience. Stability is absolutely crucial for clean work units and for your own progress up the chart. I am around 18,000 place of over 450,000 users and I started less than a year ago I think. I fold at home and at work (I own my own company), but its still only two computers. I do notice that my Athlon 64 is more productive than my Athlon XP at the same RAM and clock speed.

It seems like molasses at first, you know, "a watched pot never boils" but then one day you look and you've added up quite a few work units. Welcome and good luck!!!

Just OC'd my 4000 to 2.82Ghz... Going to see if I can tweak that up to 3Ghz, stable.. but it requires some time and tweaking still. This is just a quick first pass... not bad for less than an hour's work.

-Nate

I forgot to mention that is one nice rig. Have fun! It definately gets addictive.

Welcome all new folders!!
