Just some thoughts

How compact and high performing could you make a mini ITX system?

Especially with the new i5 platform (1 chipset). You put laptop style connectors (MXM (go silly for 2?), ram, mini PCI-e and wireless aerial port on the back panel). Ship it with a gfx/CPU/chipset cooler with optional fan.

Would fit in a box the size of the nettop, could slap in one or two 280m cards. Would be able to play the latest games for lans etc while being light and not taking up much space.

Would not be hugely cheap but would have performance to back up the price.

I suppose you might ask why not get a laptop, mainly to avoid lower quality built in displays. A bit niche though maybe.

But laptop parts are not available just anywhere, and nor are mainboards with such slots.

Oh you can get them from official parts supplies (in single units) or from ebay.

You are right that boards are not there.

I think the HP firebird uses this approach. Expensive nonetheless
